1. ALEXANDER1 DE CAIRNS/CARNYS was born Bet. 1570 - 1635 in Scotland, and died in County Donegal, Ireland.
Notes for ALEXANDER DE CAIRNS/CARNYS:
Descended from the de Caryns/Carnys family in Scotland. Received a land grant from his cousin, King James I of England, of 2000 acres in County Donegal in Northern Ireland. (Communication from Dr. Donald Carnes, Marietta, GA)
A charter from 7/24/1509 gives respite to Lawrence Haldane, son of Sir John Haldane of Gleneagles, Scotland for "the slaughter of the late Robert Carnys". Sir John Haldane's wife, Agnes Menteith, was a great-granddaughter of Duncan VIII, last of the ancient Celtic Earls of Lennox (Levenax). Duncan and his son-in-law Murdoch, Duke of Albany, cousin to King James I of England, were executed on the Heading Hill at Sterling in May 1425 for unknown offense.
(from "The Haldanes of Gleneagles" by General Sir James Aylmer Lowthorpe Haldane, 1929, William Blackwood and Sons, Ltd., Edinburgh and London -- obtained from FTM User Home Page Report: The Haldanes of Gleneagles, by John L. Haldane.)
Alexander Carnes, a Scottish lowland Laird, resented Royal control and arranged a swap of his land in Scotland for land in N. Ireland, which turned out to be a mistake, since they were not respected in Ireland and he lost most of the family assets, but recovered financially. (interview with Dr. Donald Carnes, 10/3/1999)
