Roger Thornton of NFP in R, planter to William Garland of the parish of Cople in the Co of Westmoreland, carpenter, for 2000 lbs of tobacco, all that tract of about 70 acres of land in NFP and R, bounded by the patent course, Henry Harford, Charles Wilkinson, the swamp, David Phillips, the land lately bought by the siad William Garland of the said Roger Thornton.The 70 acres is part of a patent for 159 acres granted to Henry Thornton, father of the said Roger Thornton. To have and to hold, except reserving to Anne Deboard, mother of the said Roger Thornton, her life in the said land, and likewise, excepting one third part of an acre of land for a burial place for said Roger Thornton and his heirs.Signed Roger (R his mark) thornton. Wit James Hardwick, Thomas Randall. Isabell Thornton, teh wife of the said Roger Thornton, appeared in court and relinquished her right of dower. Recorded Feb 1, 1726.(Richmond Co DB 8-375)

Note by HLD:I have not tried to sort all of this out, but it appears that 3 sons (Henry, John and Roger) of this Roger Thornton went to Granville Co NC at about the same time as two sons of John Debord (George and John).John Debord was the half brother of this Roger Thornton. That would make the Debords and Thorntons in Granville half first cousins, if that's a good word.Most of the Thorntons went on to GA in the mid 1780's; the Debords went to Surry NC.
