On May 26th 2004, Betty was taken to the Hospital in Newbern, NC. She had collapsed at Janets' house. The ambulance took her to the hospital. She had pneumonia and had gone into cardiac arrest on two different occassions. As time went on her left lung collapsed and developed a hole in the bottom sack of the lung. She was so very sick when I saw her on May 29th. Betty was definetly fighting for her life. Betty's birthday was May 31, 2004 as she turned 62 years of age. Dave sung happy birthday to her and rubbed her cheek while she laid in bed unconsious. She was having mini strokes and her kidneys were starting to shut down. Dave and the doctors had contacted her doctors in Richmond where she was tested for liver damage every six months. They were trying to arrange getting her transported to Richmond where they could treat her liver problem. MCV had no beds available for Betty at this time. On June 9th, Richmond gave the word to transport Betty by plane. When Betty arrived in Richmond, she was in very bad condition. Her collapsed lung had an infection, more strokes, stomach could not function, kidney failure, and she was on life support. On June 17th, the doctors requested a meeting with the family. I went to Richmond with the rest of the family. At the meeting we discussed how bad Betty's condition was. We all agreed, by the doctors report, that Betty could not live off life support. Dave and us made the decision to take her off support. Betty lived for 2 hours before she died. She is now in heaven with MOM, DAD, Vera, Barbara, Phillip and Granny.
