The Roughtons of Washington County, Georgia
I was born in Statesboro, Bulloch County, Georgia as was my father. His father, Albert Levin Roughton (who married Lily Inez Connell of Wrens, Jefferson County, Georgia) was born in Sandersville, Washington County, Georgia. Albert Levin's forebearers had lived in that area for many decades. I have traced the Roughtons in Georgia to Enoch Roughton, who was born about 1792 in Georgia according to census reports. Enoch married a woman named Harriet (or Mary) Mote. They had at least four children: Louisa (b. 1823); Albert Levin (b. 1825, d. 1911); Zachariah (b. 1830, d. 1875); and George Washington (b. 1833, d. unknown). This Albert Levin is the father of Turner Eli Roughton, my great grandfather whose son, Albert Levin, is my grandfather. Enoch Roughton may have been the son of a John Roughton, who received a grant of land from the GA legislature for RW service. I'm looking for information about the Roughtons that will help me determine how they came to Georgia as well as finding out who Enoch Roughton's ancestors were. I would be happy to share information with you about the Roughtons. Other surnames appearing in my family tree are: Clark, Rhodes,Murphy (or Murphey), Wofford, Connell (or Connel), Maas, and Cummings (or Cummins). If you have information about any of these families, I should like very much to correspond with you. |
