Notes for Capt. Robert Craft Tweedy:
[]
e-mail from Barry Reid McCain, Oxford Mississippi rcvd 6/1/97, his e-mail address: Failte@watervalley.net :
"Yes, my paternal grandmother was a Tweedy and connected with line you speak of. Her name Sarah Pearl Tweedy, born 1883, I remember her quite well and she was my link with the past. The Tweedys are an old Celtic family, Cymric Celts from southern Scotland. My grandmother had the Second Sight, which always gave me the creeps as a young boy. Our branch of the Tweedys came originally from the Carolinas and were mountain people. I know they were in the Southern Back settlements circa mid 1700s, maybe earlier. They were Copperheads during the War, i.e. though living north of the Mason Dixon, they were pro Southern (showing their natural good sense).

The Southern branch west of the Carolinas are in Mississippi and Texas (the Hill country southwest of Austin). There are some out in California, and of course many back in Scotland and Ireland.

Tweedy comes from the Celtic word, Twyad, which means to swell, be powerful, etc., an old Celtic tribal name.

My great grandfather was Robert Tweedy, born May, 1857, Union County Illinois, so we are probably a direct link."

----------
James P. Tweedy was buried at the Belt cemetery 2 miles out of Ozark on Hwy 23. in Franklin Co. Ark. there is a large built up rock grave site said to be Civil War graves of James P. Tweedy & Wm. Bond they were neighbors on the 1860 census. During the latter part of the Civil War these young boys were murdered by Union soldiers on the side of Adams Mountain near Ozark. Batie Bonel & Sinclair Floyd placed the bodies on a bed sheet in an Ox cart & hauled to this location. they were buried in a common grave. erected in 1994.
NOTE; There is a marriage record in Jackson Co., Arkansas as follows;
James S. Tweedy married Mary Meriman on 19 July 1866, but don't think it is the same James but believe they are related.
NOTE; I had him as JAMES P. but found someone's info. stating he was JAMES FRED TWEEDY.
