| Family legend always held that two brothers came from Canada and started the clan. Thanks to the internet I finally was able to connect the Joseph Rozat and Francois Rozat of Louisiana to Joseph Rosa (Mar 17, 1750) and brother, Francois (June 13, 1752) of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, who came to Louisiana circa 1780 and settled near the Fort of Opelousas, then a Spainish garrison with headquarters between the present towns of Opelousas and Washington, Louisiana. From these two individuals the entire Rozas clan was born. The majority of Rosa (the historically correct spelling) Rosat, Rozat and then Rozas (first used circa 1858) settled in the Chataignier, Evangeline Parish area. Most of them can be found in the #1 cd of marriage records, etc. available from Broderbund or researched in the records of the St. Landry Catholic Church records. Thanks to the Geneological Society of Quebec I was also able to gain a vast amount of info on their parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents who are from Genoa, Italy and Lisbon, Portugal, respectfully, not France. Now you know why you like Pizza so much. Although we are not Acadian, although guickly married into the Acadians,at that level of ancestor (12 generations) most living Rozas have at least 640 different lines we come from, so hummm - which do you choose. At least the name is Italian. I plan to scan into the tree copies of the old records-like the Society's material, Joseph's deed signed before the Colonel of the Spanish garrison at Opelousas, Lastie Rosa's surrender papers at Vicksburg, July 7, 1863, etc. I will also record the whole work in the Miscellanous records of the Clerks office at the Courthouse, Ville Platte, la. 70586 no later than Dec. 31,2001, maybe! I have attached as a "report" hereto, a dated version of the infomation on all these people, some 3800 names in differant formats, i.e. up/down and by name of present or oldest. I have included, for preservation purposes, other trees done by other Rozas's, Fontenots, Vidrines, Lafleurs and Guillorys. I would like to add everything you may have, backwards and up to your latest grandchildren's children. The current, and never yet complete tree, has been posted here to the World Family Tree Project (8/18/97) and will be available (?) in the next CD I guess. The reports and outlines that are attached hereto, are, of course, up or down from me, but the early dates may apply to you to, cuz... I would also love to e-mail or slow-mail any of the information to you. Wouldn't it be great if we could add all the living relatives of Joseph and Francois, as well as their ancestor relatives in Canada, Italy, Portugal and France. If any of you visit Europe or can do research there please let me know so I can add it here.Other family names with research back to Europe and whose roots and some of the tree are included herein are: FONTENOT (back to circa 1650), VIDRINE (back to circa 1580); GUILLORY (back to circa 1650) This is a life long project and a labor of love -Please join in. God bless. Allen Bruce Rozas, J.D. |
