Soldier erected by the Anna Asbury Stone Chapter, DAR, Cambridge, Ohio. Hannah Barnes was the dau. of Henry Slack, a soldier from Maryland. Her claim for bounty lands is listed in the file for Henry Slack - B.L. Wt. 1048-100 in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The following material is from that file: Discharge: Agreeable to a resolution of Congress bearing the date the 26 day of May, 1783, the bearer, Henry Slack of Md. Artillery, has leave of absence until called by proper authority to join his corps or is finally discharged. Given at Annapolis. (He enlisted Nov. 14, 1777 and was discharged 7-10-1783. The file shows that in 1817 Hannah and Leaven Barnes were living in Fayette Co. Pa. and by 1822 they were residents of Belmont Co. Ohio. On June 15, 1822, Thomas Barnes, aged 73, made an affidavit swearing the he knew Hannah Barnes, and that she was formerly Hannah Slack, and that Henry Slack did perform military service. Thomas Dickerson and Leonard Barnes also signed affidavits in support of Hannah's claim. Hannah Barnes was granted Lot #5, 3rd Quarter, 1st Township, 1st Range (100 acres) U.S. Military Lands. This is now in Richland Township, Guernsey County.
