Descendants of Mary Eliza HEALY - 3 Jun 2001 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIRST GENERATION 1. Mary Eliza HEALY was born on January 3, 1842 near Mentor, Lake County, Ohio.1 She died on June 13, 1909 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.1 She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mary Eliza Healy's ancestors were early New England settlers. Her mother descended from Robert Goodell, of Denningham, Sussex, England, and his wife Catherine who sailed for America with three children from Ipswich, England on April 30, 1634 on the "Elizabeth". They settled in Salem, Massachusetts. Robert may have descended from a French Huguenot family named Godelle or Goodelle who emigrated to London about 1530. Mary's father was Arnold Healy who probably descended from William Healy (Hele) of Devon, England who came to America before 1643 and lived in Lynn, Massachusetts and later Cambridge, Massachusetts. The first record of Mary Eliza Healy was found in 1860 when she appeared on the Federal Census for Wisconsin with her husband, Tom Bentley, and three sons. She was 19 years old. By 1870 she was listed on the Wisconsin Census in Kenosha, Wisconsin, with her second husband, William Daniels. Her father and his family lived nearby. She was a "tailoress" and had at least twelve children. She said she was born near Mentor, Ohio, in Lake County, however, no record of her birth has been found. Mentor, Ohio is located near Kirkland, an early settlement of the followers of Joseph Smith (leader of the religious sect, Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints). An Arnold Healy is been identified as one of the church elders. No further record of this Arnold Healy has been found in Morman Church Records. Mary Eliza and her second husband moved their family to Minnehaha County in Dakota Territory about 1875 with her father and her brother, Sidney. Sidney had served in the Civil War for Wisconsin and received a Homestead Patent for Land in Dakota Territory. She was married to Thomas BENTLEY about 1857. Thomas BENTLEY2,3,4,5 was born about 1834.2,6 Possible birthplaces of Thomas are England, Canada and Massachusetts. He lived in Kenosha County, Wisconsin where he purchased land from Ann Campbell in 1855. He and Mary Eliza sold this land in 1860 and probably went to live near her father in Salem Township. His descendants spoke of living in Wilmont which is located a short distance from the homestead of Arnold Healy. He died before 1869. He died between 1864 and 1869. Thomas and Mary lived in the North West Quarter of Section No. 10 in the Town of Hudson in Kenosha County, Wisconsin in 1860 when they appeared on the Federal Census for Wisconsin. They sold fifty-four one hundredths of an acre to Thomas Hudson on the 25th of July in 1860. In 1865 the name of the town was changed to Lyons and where Thomas and Mary had lived would become the Village of Lyons. Thomas was a hunter and trader of horses. He probably also was a ferrier or horse shoer. It was said he was four inches too short to serve in the Civil War. Mary Eliza HEALY and Thomas BENTLEY had the following children: +2 i. Charles Sidney BENTLEY (born on September 12, 1857). 3 ii. William BENTLEY was born about 1859 in Wisconsin. He was cremated in 1886 in Chicago, Cook County, Ilinois.3 He died in 1886 in Illinois.3 Information regarding William is not proven. He may have married a Betty born about 1880 in Wisconsin and had a son Ray. +4 iii. Frank BENTLEY (born about 1860). 5 iv. Frederick Ephriam BENTLEY3 was born on February 5, 1862 in probably Wilmont, Wisconsin. He died after 1935 in possibly Saquache, Colorado. +6 v. Grant Ulyssus BENTLEY (born on July 2, 1864). She was married to William Wesley DANIELS (son of George DANIELS and Mary BEECHAM) on September 16, 1869 in Salem, Kenosha County, Wisconsin.7 William Wesley DANIELS8,9,10,11,12,13 was born on March 17, 1843 in Freisten Fen, Lincolnshire, England.14,15 He died on March 1, 1920 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.16,17 He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.18 He is buried in the Pinelawn Plot Lot 828 at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family of William Daniels lived in Freisten Fen near Stickney in Lincolnshire, England. There were four boys and three girls born to his parents, George Daniels and Mary Beecham Daniels. William said he came to America in 1861, although no arrival record has been found. It is thought he arrived in Canada and travelled to Illinois. He lived for a short time in Solon Township in Mc Henry County, Illinois. On August 12, 1862 he enlisted in the Civil War at Rockford, Illinois and served in Company H of the 95th Illinois Infantry. He was about five foot seven inches tall with blue eyes and dark hair and gave his occupation as "farmer". He served three years with the Union Army in the battles at Vicksburg and Guntown, Mississippi, Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee and Montgomery, Alabama. He was discharged at Camp Butler in Springfield, Illinois. He suffered heat stroke at Guntown and was rammed by a bull at Vicksburg. Following the War, he became a Naturalized Citizen of the United States in 1868 while still a resident of McHenry County in the State of Illinois. He was granted this citizenship for having served in the Civil War. He married Mary Eliza HEALY and took residence in Salem Township in Kenosha County, Wisconsin on land that probably belonged to his father-in-law. His first five children were born at Antioch in Lake County, Illinois which is very close to the Wisconsin border. In 1876, William moved his family to Minnehaha County in Dakota Territory where he filed for a homestead patent Also in the party were Mary Eliza's brother, Sidney, who had served in the Civil War, and probably her father and children from her first marriage. William and Mary Eliza arrived in Dakota Territory on the 1st of June, 1876 where they lived and farmed on fifty acres in Section 5 of Grand Meadow Township. William built a house which was 24 feet by 24 feet and had two doors and three windows. He also built a stable and dug a well on the property. William received his final patent certificate to one hundred and sixty acres in 1882 and lived on the property with his wife and seven living children. William and Mary Eliza are considered South Dakota Pioneers, because they arrived prior to statehood. It is recorded that William served as postmaster for the now non-existant town of Oran in 1883 and also as town supervisor. In 1884, William and Eliza sold their homestead, of one hundred and sixty-eight acres, for $750 and moved to Sioux Falls Township and farmed two hundred acres about a mile southeast of the City of Sioux Falls. His sales of fruits and vegatables amounted to $1,000 annually. At that time, the population of Sioux Falls was about 12, 000 people, however, the expansion of the city in the future no doubt included the farm of William Daniels. By 1900 William and Eliza were recorded as living on S. Ohio Street in Sioux Falls, with their daughters Lillian and Minnie, a grandson William Emerson (b. June 1897) and five boarders. Following the death of Mary Eliza, William married, Clara Towe, also of England and had four more children who were ultimately put out for adoption. The family lived for a time in Sioux Falls at 403 S. Boulder. He received a Civil War Pension and was a member of the Joe Hooker Post No. 10, Grand Army of the Republic. A GAR market stands at his grave. Mary Eliza HEALY and William Wesley DANIELS had the following children: +7 i. Lillian J. DANIELS (born on August 26, 1870). 8 ii. Child DANIELS was born about 1871. When William applied for a Civil War Pension he stated he had ten children by his first wife. Since no other children were shown on the census records it is assumed the child died in infancy. He (or she) died in infancy. On the 1900 Census, Mary Eliza said she had 15 children and 9 living. It is likely a child died in infancy before the 1880 Census. +9 iii. Arthur Wesley DANIELS (born in September 1872). +10 iv. Herbert William DANIELS (born on June 3, 1874). +11 v. Lottie May DANIELS (born on October 3, 1875). +12 vi. Minnie M. Her brothers were born in Antioch. It is not known whether the family actually lived in Lake County which is on the border of Illinois and Wisconsin. She died on December 4, 1948 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.35,36 She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.37 Lottie's father was born in Lincolnshire, England and came to America in 1860. He served in the Civil War in the Illinois 95th Infantry. Following the War he married Lottie's mother in Wisconsin. They moved to Dakota Territory and settled in Minnehaha County where they were Dakota Pioneers having arrived prior to statehood. Her father built a small house and was able to work some of the land into a profitable farm. They lived near her mother's family as her uncle Sidney Healy had also obtained a homestead patent for land. Lottie descended from early New England settlers. Her grandfather was Arnold Healy who probably descended from William Healy (Hele) of Devon, England who came to America before 1643 and lived in Lynn, Massachusetts and later Cambridge, Massachusetts. Another ancestor was Robert Goodell, of Denningham, Sussex, England. He and wife Catherine sailed for America with three children from Ipswich, England on April 30, 1634 on the "Elizabeth". They arrived in Salem, Massachusetts and remained there. She was married to Otis Chester ADAMS (son of Warren ADAMS and Sarah Caroline RUST) on September 10, 1894 in Canton, Lincoln County, South Dakota.38,39 At the time of her marriage, Lottie said she was living in Lincoln County where her brother, Herbert, had a farm. Otis Chester ADAMS40,41,42,43,44 was born on October 29, 1867 in Sheldon Corners, Wayne County, Michigan.45,35 He died on October 6, 1946 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.35,46 He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.37 The family later would say that Otis was born near Dearborn, where Henry Ford was born. Henry Ford being the well known automobile manufacturer of the early twentieth century. Otis was born near Dearborn, however, his parents left that area shortly after his birth and lived for a time near Lansing, Michigan before going West to the Dakotas. His father was a carpenter by trade and probably worked on the new State Capitol Building being constructed there. Otis was thirteen when he went to Dakota Territory with his father and mother. While he remembered Michigan well, Dakota in later years became be his home. Following the death of his father, he stayed with his mother and brothers and helped care for the farm near Wentworth, South Dakota where is mother filed a Homestead claim. He lived there, in Lake County, about thirteen years. After he was married he lived in Ocheyden, Iowa before returning to South Dakota. He made his home in Sioux Falls and he established himself as a businessman and carpenter. He built over 400 houses in the Sioux Falls area during his career as a building contractor. Two homes that remain in use today are located at 1315 S. Summit, Sioux Falls and 1012 W. 22nd, Sioux Falls. (photos) During the early part of the 1900s, Otis owned and operated a silent movie theater known as The Olympia. (photo) He rebuilt the theatre and extended its size to one hundred and forty two feet from front to rear. It was considered one of the most beautiful and comfortable theaters in the city in 1915. The theatre had a seating capacity of three hundred and eighty seven and proudly boasted of a "fireproof operating booth, equipped with the latest safety devices built of reinforced concrete and so arranged that in case of fire, an automatic trap confined the fire to the booth alone and the occupants of the theater were in no danger whatever." His children were all trained on musical instruments and when old enough they played in the orchestra pit to accompany the movies. Music was always an important part of their lives. In later years the children would still play piano and violin for the entertainment of their families, friends, and themselves. (photo) When his parents went to Dakota, his two sisters married and remained in Michigan. As the years passed, Otis saw little of his brothers and sisters, but missed they dearly. Once, shortly after Otis had purchased his first automobile, he took his wife and daughters on an adventure trip to Michigan from South Dakota. Written on the back of the Model A Sedan were the words, "Jackson or Bust!". They arrived safely and were welcomed by the Adams clan which lived in Jackson Township, Michigan. The family also took a vacation to North Dakota, where they no doubt visited relatives. (photos) Otis saw his brothers occasionally when he was newly married, however, they moved on to jobs which took them to cities farther west and staying in contact was difficult. Once, in about 1920, Otis and Lottie took Otis' stepfather Louis Crane on a somewhat adventurous trip to Washington State to visit Otis' brothers "Ben" and "Nels". The trip was an adventure because Louis was over 80 years old and had a bad hip. They all survived and told stories of their trip for several years later. Otis and Lottie were known as "Oat and Lot" and well loved by their family and neighbors. They were members of the Methodist Church. He obtained a delayed birth certificate in 1943. He died on November 19, 1951 in Wadsworth, Missouri or Kansas.60 The obituary for Bill Adams states that he died in Wadsworth, Missouri. This location is in error and is probably Wadsworth, Kansas. He was buried in Hills of Rest, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Military and Masonic rites were held at the Hills of Rest memorial park gravesite upon the death of Bill Adams. The pallbearers were all former members of the 147th field artillery battalion. Bill grew up in Sioux Falls, attending schools there and graduating from Washington High School. He served in the first World War in the 147th field artillery Battery D. He served in the Aragon Forest in France and received severe injuries. Following WWI he lived in Sioux Falls and in Kansas City, Missouri where he was a film salesman and was associated with Universal, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Columbia film companies. He was a skilled carpenter and was well known for constructing a replica of Solomon's Temple which is currently housed at the Masonic Lodge in Sioux Falls. (photo) It took six months to build the model using nothing but a hammer, a straight saw and a jack-knife. The miniature is six feet square and five feet high. The temple courtyard is surrounded by walls six inches high with three gates more than 12 inches high. The steps leading through the gates, according to the Bible, had risers about 15 inches high. Color schemes, decorations, designs and furnishings in the replica are carefully in accordance with the Bible descriptions. The miniature was on display at the Masonic Lodge Library for some time. Her father had been born in Michigan and his father was a Michigan Pioneer, having settled in Michigan Territory in 1834. She died on June 3, 1983 in Royal Oak, Oakland County, Michigan.62 She was buried in White Chapel Cemetery, Oakland County, Michigan.63 Lillian grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she attend Lowell School. The Orpheum Theater was built to hold vaudeville stage shows, but soon the motion picture industry replaced live acts and changed the theater business. The Orpheum became the Olympia when owned by her father, Otis Adams. (photo) Her father's business was a success and the family lived happily in the thriving community of Sioux Falls. She told many stories of growing up with her brother and sisters when they lived on Summit Avenue in a house which her father had built. (photo) Since music was so much a part of the family, they shared many enjoyable evenings of entertainment at home and at the movie house on Phillips Avenue. Sioux Falls was a thriving town and had even received telephone service by 1882. Phillips Avenue was the first residential street to be paved when pavement was extended to Twenty-first Street. The Adams family lived at 1012 W. 22nd. As she developed into young womanhood she learned the skills which were customarily taught to girls of her day. She went to class to learn to paint fine china dishes and the set she painted, consisting of over 100 pieces, is treasured today by her descendants. She worked part time at the Bee Hive Department Store in Sioux Falls. Lillian continued to play violin professionally with her sisters in the Adams Orchastra. (photo) She was married to Monroe T.
