I am researching my birth family's history. My maiden name was DOWNEY..My Great-great Grandfather-THOMAS DOWNEY(1824-1887) was married to a MARY GREMEA(1832-1899)(I can only find the name spelled as GREME..not sure of spelling)-their son MICHAEL DOWNEY(1860-1926) married a JULIA DUNN(1860-1919) and in turn had LEO DOWNEY, my grandfather. I believe that the DOWNEY family is from the WASHINGTON D.C. area or the surround part of VIRGINIA or MARYLAND-possibly the ROCK CREEK area. JULIA was the daughter of an ANTHONY DUNN amd a MARY HARTLEY(she was married twice, her other spouse's name was HARTLEY, or vice-versa).
My grandmother, MARIA THERESA WATERS, although she went by M. THERESA WATERS(1890-1978) was the daughter of JOHN OLIVER WATERS(1866-1946) and MARIA CECELIA SHEA(1865-1943).
This is the breakdown for the SHEA branch: MARIA was the daughter of JOHN E. SHEA(1832-1908) and MARIA CECELIA FLANNAGAN(1943-1900)she came from ROSCOMMON, IRELAND---JOHN E> was the son of JOHN SHEA and ELIZABETH CAREY while MARIA CECELIA was the daughter of a woman named MARY MURPHY and someone named FLANNAGAN.
The WATERS branch is as follows: JOHN OLIVER was the son of JOHN ARTIS WATERS(1836-1888) and MARGARET THERESA CHAMBERLAIN(born 1841). They were married on 2-18-1861.
I know that the SHEA branch came from WASHINGTON D.C. as did the WATERS. The SHEA's have a family plot in the MT OLIVET CEMETARY in WASH., D.C.
I know that part of the family arrived in the states in the port of BALTIMORE but when i don't know, the ship we arrived on was the TUSCARORA.
I believe that the union between SHEA-CAREY came to the U.S. by way of ENGLAND first as we have a baptismal certificate dated 4-4-1885 at St Patrick's SOHO, MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND
I am also searching my maternal side of the family as well. The main name I have info on is KIDWELL..I know the family is from WALES originally, we have a relative in the Revolutionary Way..BENJAMIN KIDWELL..but that is as far as I can go and I don't know how he is related. The most accurate info I have is from 1763, for a JOHN KIDWELL who was married to an ELEANOR HAYES. Most of the family comes from the HAMPSHIRE COUNTY are of WEST VIRGINIA and the surrounding counties. My maternal great-grandfather WILLIAM HENRY McCLEARY(1859-1908) was definetly adopted but when, where and by whom I don't know..by this I mean was he adopted by other family members. This side of the family is priamrily SCOTCH-IRISH,WELSH AND GERMAN. Other names associated here are as follows:
