I have been researching my family name, RUGMAN since 1986 and I have registered the name with The Guild 0f One-Name Studies (GOONS).

The original source of the name is unclear for there are different opinions. One surname dictionary gives meaning as ‘dweller on the ridge’ while on several websites the more obvious definition is ‘rug dealer’. In 2000, I found a reference on the PRO website for leases on properties in Rugman’s Row, St. Bartholomew the Great, West Smithfield, London, in 1645. Rugman's Row was a line of boothes at the Bartholomew's Fair and they developed into more permanent buildings about 1616. The original name of the street was New Street which can be found on the 1881 census, but today it is called Newbury Street.
There are two main trees, Gloucester that contains 682 individuals including 337 Rugmans and Sussex (including Surrey, London and Kent) which contains 833 individuals with 144 Rugmans. (August 2001).

I have many indexes including the GRO index for BMD 1837-1940 and welcome enquiries from anyone with Rugmans in their tree. Since Rugman is a rare name I should be to attach most descendants to one of these trees.

Any information would also be appreciated. See also
