Notes for J
OHN RUNYON, SR.:
The father of John Runyon, Sr. is unknown. Norman L. Runyon (nrunyon@voyager.net) is the current authority on this Runyon line and he has been researching the descendents of John Runyon, Sr. for many years, and in the process of his searches, he has ammassed a database of over 20,000+ individuals. Norman first assumed that John Runyon's father (sometimes referred to as "Brocks Gap John") may have been John Runyon son of Peter. As of the summer of 1998 Norman had the following observations concerning possible fathers of John.

"If you look over the Harman Clark reports, two other John Runyons are
presented as possible candidates for the Brocks Gap John. One is descended
from Vincent Rongnion's son John and one from Vincent's son Thomas. Either of
these would seem to more likely than Peter's son. Personally, I am leaning
toward the descendant of Thomas but nothing has been proven on any of them."

Norman in January, 1999 stated:
"The reason that I think that the father of my "John Runyon, Sr."
was, also, named John is that the 1st record that I have of a Runyon, in
my line, is when a John Runyon (Runying) obtained land from a Jacob
Goodpasture in Dec 1753. Goodpasture had obtained a land grant, in
Brocks Gap (which was in Augusta County then) and he, immediately,
transferred it to Runyon. My John, Sr. had his 1st known child
Elizabeth ca. 1761 and I have documented proof that he died in 1830. It
is highly unlikely that my John, Sr. was old enough to purchase land in
1753. I'm guessing that he was born ca. 1740. I have no records of my
Runyons for the time period 1754-1761 but that could be because the
French & Indian War started in the spring of 1754 and, according to the
Linville Creek Baptist Church records, many of the people in the church
left the area until the conflict was over. The Runyons may have been
among those who evacuated. In any case, the Runyon / Runion family has
continued to live on that same property to this day so it looks to me
like the John who bought the property would have to have been the father
of my John, Sr."

Researchers should note that the early spelling of the surname for this family was usually Runion or sometimes Runnion. Those descendants that remained in Virginia usually spell their names Runion or Runyon. Descendants of those that settled in Ohio, spell their names Runyan.

Notes for A
NNE GOODPASTURE:
It has been established that John Runyon, Sr. had a wife named Anne, and many have assumed her name was Anne Goodpasture, but better documentation on her last name is needed.
