Ancestors of Harry Shook

      12. George Colvin, born Bef. 1810 in Virginia; died Aft. 1842. He was the son of 24. John Colvin? and 25. Mary unknown. He married 13. Sophia Unknown.

      13. Sophia Unknown, born October 20, 1807 in Virginia or Maryland; died February 10, 1893 in Monroe County, Ohio.

Notes for George Colvin:
The story was handed down through the family that George and his wife Sophia moved North from Virginia because George was an overseer on a farm where his employer wanted him to beat the slaves. George didn't want to do it, so he moved north.

Left Virginia between 1830-32 ( joining relatives?), in Fayette Co, Pa.. where a daughter, Eliza Jane , was born about 1832/3. By 1835 or early 1836, George and Sophia moved to Belmont Co., OH where he is listed as purchasing land on February 24, 1836; then in Monroe Co., OH where George purchased land February 12, 1839.

Accroding to OHio River Survery, George bought land in Ohio, Marietta district, Monroe Co. Nov. 11, 1837(lived in Belmont Co) and March 10, 1843.(lived in Monroe Co.)

Most early Colvin information is from a paper written in 1990 by Marilyn Solari Sullivan. She states it is speculation on her part.

Their is no proof that John and Charles were brothers or that the children listed belonged to them. It does seem likely, however, that the information is correct.

  Notes for Sophia Unknown:
Sophia's great grandson, Harry Shook, remembered her. He said he remembered seeing her sitting in a corner wearing a polka dot dress and that she smoked a corn cob pipe. He said she called everyone "Honey." It was said that one time the boys in the family, as a prank, put gun powder in her pipe and it blew up when she lit it. The day she died, she told whoever it was that was with her (perhaps a daughter) that she was going to die and that the woman should go get someone so she wouldn't be there along when Sophia died. When the woman got back, Sophia was dead.
