View Tree for William StormontWilliam Stormont (b. Abt. 1744, d. October 19, 1794)

William Stormont (son of Samuel Stormont and Martha) was born Abt. 1744 in County Antrim, Ireland, and died October 19, 1794 in Chester County, SC. He married Anna McClure on Bef. 1772 in Ireland.

 Includes NotesNotes for William Stormont:
October, 1772 The Lord Dunluce departed Larne, Ireland, and arrived in December 20, 1772, at Charleston, South Carolina.

In December of 1772, five ships carrying 1,000 settlers from Ireland
(with Pastor William Martin) arrived at Charleston, South Carolina.

Of the five ships, we have been able to ascertain only four names:

The Lord Dunluce, Captain James Gillis (or Gilles) from Larne
The Hopewell, Captain Martin from Belfast
The Pennsylvania Farmer, Captain Robeson from Belfast
The Freemason, Captain Semple from Newry

Many of the passengers were members of a Presbyterian Church (Ballymoney
Congregation), pastored by William Martin, around the Belfast area who had
decided that they must leave their homeland if they were to worship in peace.

The Lord Dunluce, 1772

Voyages are listed at ship name on Ship List

October, 1772 The Lord Dunluce departed Larne, Ireland, and arrived in December, 1772, at Charleston, South Carolina. (For further information regarding this group of Irish Protestants, see Ships to South Carolina, 1768 & 1772.).

Note: Prior to this time, the "Bounty Act" had expired and no bounty could be paid to the individuals. There was, therefore, no list of the passengers for the purpose of determining "family rights". Family members and other individual passengers who were not eligible (e.g., under 15) to petition for free land (still available under the eighth clause of the General Duty Act of June 14, 1751) are not listed below. (See "Bounty Act".)

William Stormont (Stormant) was awarded 150 acres upon arrival in the Lord Dunluce - 100 for himself and 50 for his dependant wife. It is not known why Samuel, his father was awarded none - some of the fleet actually bought their property, rather than take land, which was scattered (not given to family groups).

The fleet of ships with Rev. William Martin (Covenanters).
