|My search for my Cherokee blood has led me to find these ancestors thus far:
John Powell & Martha Short had Henry Jackson Powell abt 1823/24 in either Mississippi or Louisiana.
Henry Jackson Powell married Nancy Burch who was born abt 1828 in Georgia (?). Nancy's parents were Richard Burch and Fanny. Nancy Burch Powell and Henry J. Powell had my ggrandmother, Laura Delaney Powell in 1865. Laura Powell married John Henry Fonville, b. 1862. Both are buried in San Augustine, Texas. They had my grandmother, Addie Fonville, in 1903. She married Clyde Washington Jordan, b. 1902. They had my father, Prentiss Lee Jordan in 4/19/1925 in Brookeland, Texas.
So much for the Powell's, Fonville's and Burch's.
With one notable exception. My personal brick wall named Thursa Carter.
Thursa Carter was born abt 1820-22 (in Alabama? Tenn?). Perhaps her father was William Carter. On the internet, one distant cousin's family tradition said Thursa was the Cherokee adopted by William Carter. I don't have anything verifying this. In fact, I can't find her anywhere.
She married Richard James John Henry Fonville (RJJH) in Bibb Co., Alabama in 1843. He was born in 1819 in what was known as Cahawba (now Alabama). His father was William Fonville, born abt. 1793, also in Cahawba. William Fonville was married to Sally Fancher, b. 1797. According to one family source, RJJH Fonville said he was of Cherokee descent. Perhaps it was through this Sally Fancher from Cahawba.
William Fonville's parents were Francis Fonville, b.1762 in NC and Elizabeth B. Wherry. They married in 1792 in Craven, NC. I don't know anything about Elizabeth Wherry.
Francis' father was also Francis, b. 1738. His mother was Sarah Bright, b. 1739 (?). They married in 1758. I don't know anything about Sarah Bright.
Francis' father was John Fonville, b. 1701. He married Elizabeth Brice in 1733. She was born about 1710 in New Bern, Craven, NC.
I don't know anything about her either.
From my dad's dad, Clyde W. Jordan: Clyde's mother was Louise Texana McClelland, b. 1873. Clyde's father was Charles Miles Jordan, b. 1862. There are Letney's and Lowe's on that side.
On McClelland's side: Her mother was Thirsey Robbins, b. 1835. Thirsey married Samuel McClelland, b. 1830.
Thirsey's mom was Elizabeth Easterling, b. 1803 in SC. Elizabeth married William Robbins in 1824 in Marion City, Mississippi.
There is a Joel Easterling......who married Charlotte Deer. I have traced the Easterlings back to the "headwater" of Henry Easterling, b. 1658 in Maryland. He married Elizabeth Vines, b. 1675 in Maryland.
There are also Widdingtons and Chears and Bennetts in this line.
Today is Saturday, June 5, 1999. I am desperately trying to find the Cherokee ancestor in our line up or any further information about any of these ancestors. In the process of this search, a distant cousin of my dad's told me we are also Choctaw, but todate, I have not heard how he got this information, nor have I verified our Cherokee or Choctaw blood.
I wish to do both. If you are reading this, perhaps you can help.
Meantime, the trail grows cold as I sit and type this. It is time to head out.......
I'll update this page when I can.
