Scans 22, 24 & 25 were obviously taken at the same time and place, in Wick, Caithness, probably showing 4 sisters and 2 brothers. I suspect that these are the Leith children of the hotelkeeper in Wick and later in Nairn, born between 1855 and 1864. Assuming that the youngest girl is about 4 or 5, the photo would have been taken about 1869. However, it is possible that they were Millers or Sutherlands, or some other family.
- HARRISON PHOTO: SCAN 7 (37 KB)
these are also near the front of the album but are completely unidentified. The photographer was in Wick, suggesting that they may have been Millers or Bains, but no guarantee. They could be sisters separated by quite a few years, or even mother and daughter, or .... If the "mother" was a Miller, she might have been one married to a Sutherland or Leith, or she might have been the wife of one of the Miller sons, or ........??

I believe that scans 8, 9, 10 &11 belong together, since they were all on the same page, were in similar condition and were all by the same photographer. These 4 scans may be siblings Janet, Lillias, James &Mary Helen Morrison. The spots appear not to be on these photographs and I wonder whether they all might be copies of earlier photos. On the rear this photographer does not say that he does portraits. The rear gives the name of the studio and photographer and then says "Art Gallery", address in Glasgow, and then "Pictures copied. Enlargements colored in oil, water color or sepia.". Then in very small print at the bottom is "Marion, Imp. Paris". The photos of Lillias Morrison and her sister Margaret Morrison seem to show a resemblance, particularly to scan 8. Scans 8 &9 look alike and seem to be wearing the same dress and locket (or had matching sets) and are probably sisters.

The photographer was Turnbull & Sons, Glasgow, the same one as scan 45. I know of no other connection between these two photos. Her eyes remind me of my grandmother's and one of her sisters. The open case beside the woman may be a clue. There is a possibility that she is in fact one of my grandmother's sisters, Lily Smellie, a medical doctor who was medical officer of health for Glasgow from around 1907 until about the end of WWI, when she went into private practice. She was married 1907 to John Clark who was a professor at Glasgow Univ and from 1919 to 1928 Director of Education, Glasgow School Board.

Scan 27 - this photo is different from all the others; the photo is glued onto a photographer's card saying on the rear that he was located in Islington and mentions a medal won in 1873. It is possible that the card has been re-used and the photographer and location are incorrect, but it is certain that the photo was taken after 1873 and it is likely that this was the photographer. No family connection to England is known. It is possible that this is the same man as the photo elsewhere in this collection named "James Smellie (1851 - 1919)"; I would appreciate comments on whether this is the same man.

Scan 16 - Scans 16, 17, 18 & 19 were all on one page; 2 in Inverness, one in Nairn and one in Paris (probably a vacation shot). My guess is that the first 3 were members of a family named Leith who ran a hotel in Wick until after 1861 and then later another hotel in Nairn. There were 4 daughters and 2 sons, all born in the late 1850s. The wife's name was Eliza Miller. The rear of scan 19 says in handwriting "with much love from Lizzie - taken Aug 1st / 82". Could "Lizzie" be "Eliza", who would then have been about 51 years old?
