I began searching for my father's family back in 2000 on a lark. Little did I know that it would end with a three month trip to Italy!
My father was born in Italy and trying to find the name of the village was the most difficult part. Once that happened everything just took off, and I was hooked!
Genealogy has become a major part of who I am. My search has enabled me to find hundreds of family members, both here in the States and in Italy. That's when I decided to take both of my children to Italy to visit the home of their grandfather.
We spent three months driving from Como down the Med to Calabria and back up the Adriatic. I don't think we missed a thing. But the best days were spent in a tiny village of about 500 people in Reggio Calabria; Roccaforte del Greco.
That is where we met our family! They welcomed us with open arms and embraced us as if they had known us for years. (Of course they fed us and fed us and fed us!)
Hopefully someday, I will be able to return to Italy permanently........ What can I say.............I am my father's daughter.
That day has come! I have rented a farmhouse in Pistoia and am flying out on April 29. 2009. My dog and cat are going with me........It's a family affair. I have a wonderful landlord and want to live the Italian life. I'm not sure how low I am staying.........but whatever time it may be, it will be the first item on my Bucket List!
