Obituary
All of us who are in this service today, have gathered for the purpose of paying tribute of respect to the memory of our fellow townsman, Samuel Redenius, Sr., and to share sympathetically in the burden of sorrow that his passing has brought to his family.We all desire to make our friendship as helpful as possible to his loved ones.
Mr. Redenius was born in Germany, June 6, 1881.He passed away in his home in Lake City, August 20, 1963, at the age of 82 years.
During the year following his birth, the family came to this country and located in Kansas.A few years later, he moved to Peoria, Ill., and from there came to Calhoun Co., Iowa in 1900.For a few years, he resided in Lohrville community before coming to Lake City in 1909.He spent the remainder of his life here.
On Dec. 20, 1905, he was united in marriage here in Lake City, to Miss Sarah N. Clark of Lohrville.
For a good share of his life, he was a teamster in Lake City.He handled mail and express and did general hauling.For a time, he served as night marshal and police officer.
He joined the volunteer Fire Dept. in Aug of 1911.He continued that connection until he retired from active duties in 1956 which was a period of 45 years.His record is the longest among all of those who have served the community in that capacity.
During the many years he was with the Fire Dept, he helped with all duties that required attention but especially as Foreman, assistant chief and chief for some 20 years.
Our community has good reason to recognize it's debt of gratitude to Sam Redenius for his many years of faithful and unselfish devotion to the best interests of Lake City.He as a faithful and efficient public servant.
Numbered among his deceased relatives are his parents, 4 children, 2 sisters and a brother.
His survivors include his wife, Mrs. Sarah Redenius; 5 children as follows:Samuel Redenius, Jr. of S. Sioux City, Nebr., Lawrence Redenius of Badger, IA., Albert and Gerald Redenius of Lake City, and Mrs. Josphine Garrett of Council Bluffs.He leaves a sister, Mary Mildenstein of Battle Creek, IA., and a brother, George Redenius of Ida Grove; 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Redenius observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1955.
Sam Redenius was a good father, husband and neighbor.His home was a haven for various friends who continue to be grateful to him and his generous and courtesies extended to them.
He was naturally public spirited and he manifested continuing interest in the welfare of his community and its efforts to serve the best interests of young and old.
He maintained a genuine interest in sports and was a familiar figure wherever athletic games were in progress.He was particularly interested in baseball and was a member of the local team for some years.
In the passing of Sam Redenius, this community has lost a substantial citizen.Those who knew him appreciated his genuine worth and his many friends deeply regret his departure.
His health failed steadily through a period of 3 1/2 years.During that time, everything possible was done for the comfort and welfare.
Mr. Redenius held membership in the local Trinity Methodist Church for many years.He was always reverend and respectful in his attitude toward religion and was interested in all that pertained to the welfare of the church-life of the community.
