Obituaries

 

Brother J. R. (Dick) Evans

 

It is with great sadness of heart that I try to write the obituary of Brother Joel Richard Evans, who was born November 9, 1880, and deceased this life on February 8, 1953.

Elder Asa Evans

 

Elder Asa Evans was born August 18, 1876, and died April 27, 1953.  He was the son of Harvey Evans and Malissia Bradley Evans, both of whom preceded him in death.  He was married to Deliah Staten June 29, 1907.  Sister Deliah survives him.  To this union were born nine children, all living.  Four sons:  Jennings Bryan Evans, of New Castle, Delaware, Woodrow Wilson, Cornwell and Buddy Evans, all of Delbarton, WV.  Five daughters:  Mrs Bertha Martin, Mrs Virgie Estepp, Mrs. Daisy Dempsey, Mrs Vada Farley and Mrs Esther Hodge, all of Delbarton, WV.

 

Brother Asa joined the Old Regular Baptist Church about 1910.  He was licensed to preach the fourth Saturday in December 1921.  He was ordained the fourth Saturday in May 1923.  Brother Asa was elected Clerk of the Sardis Church, Delbarton, WV, November 24, 1923.  He was appointed Assistant Moderator January 24,, 1925, and was elected Moderator January 23, 1926.  This office he held until his death.  He was also elected Moderator of Sardis Association in 1927 while the Association was split.

Sarrah L. (Canterbury) Morock

 

It is with much sadness that I write the obituary of my dear Sister, whom God called away October 2, 1951.  She was the daughter of W. M. Canterbury and Maryann (Baisden) Canterbury, and was married to Edward Morock.  To this union were born two children, Maryann, and William Edward.

 

She professed a hope in Christ and was baptized by the hands of Elders Wallace Maynard and Grover Carey and lived a faithful Christian life before the world.

W. M. Canterbury

 

It is with much sadness that I will write of dear Father, whom God called away February 23, 1952.  He was born August 18, 1874, a son of Joseph and Sarrah (Laftery) Canterbury.

 

Father was married to Maryann Baisden and to this union were born 12 children, eight preceded him in death, and four are still living to mourn his loss.  Father was baptized by the hands of Elders Wallace Maynard and Wayne Hearld.

Martha (Sheppard) Runyon

 

It becomes my sad duty to write the obituary of my beloved mother-in-law, Martha (Sheppard) Runyon, a daughter of the late Allen and Poly(White) Sheppard, born May 2, 1878, and departed this life January 13, 1950.  She was united in marriage to William E. Runyon in February, 1893, and to this union were born 8 children, names as follows:  Floyd, Julius B., Hi and Elva Runyon; daughters, Mrs. Sinda Curry, Mrs. Ruthie Spaulding, Mrs. Polly Leedy and Mrs. Rebecca Gilman.  Ruthie and Hi preceded her in death.  She joined the Regular Baptist Church many years ago and was baptized by the hands of Elder Zan Dempsey, and placed her membership with the Rebecca Church.  She later moved her membership to the Elk Fork Church where she remained a faithful member till death.

Pearly Sammons

 

It is with a sad feeling we will try to write a short sketch of William Pearly Sammons.  He was born at Dunlow, Wayne Co., WV, January 17, 1899, deceased at Memorial Hospital, Huntington, WV, December 5, 1952.  He is survived by five sons and six daughters.  One son and one daughter preceded him in death.  He also leaves three brothers and two sisters and a host of friends.  He joined the Regular Baptist Church November 16, 1952, and placed his membership with the Rosa Church, where he remained a faithful member until death.

Emma Canterbury

 

She was the daughter of Elder Frank and Rachel Canterbury, born July 6, 1903, deceased this life October 16, 1951.  She was united in marriage to William Canterbury, Jr., and to this union was born one child, Herbert Canterbury, who preceded her in death May 28, 1926.  She leaves her husband, one sister, three brothers and a host of friends.  She professed a hope in Christ and was baptized into the fellowship of the Bethany Church.

Elizabeth Lackey

 

It is by request of the Samaria Church that I write a short sketch of the life of sister Elizabeth (York) Lackey, a daughter of Josh and Sarilda (Lycons) York, born September 22, 1872, departed this life October 13, 1952.  She was married to James Lackey and to this union were born ten children.  Her husband and three of the children preceded her in death.  She leaves seven children, names as follows:  Edward, William, Ishmael, Shelva, Cornelius, Mrs. Sarilda York and Miss Mary Belle Lackey.  She also leaves two sisters and one brother:  Mrs Belle Brewer, Mrs Lula Pridemore and Bob York, thirty-eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.  Aunt Liz was baptized into the fellowship of the Samaria Church.

James Kimberlain

 

It is by request of the family that I now attempt to write the obituary of Brother James Kimberlain, who was born May 9, 1871, deceased this life May 3, 1953.

 

Alice (Smith) Kimberlain preceded him in death April 16, 1917.  To this union were born 7 children of which 3 are still living as follows:  Earl and Sam Kimberlain and Myrcle Ratliff.  He joined the Regular Baptist Church and was baptized July 20, 1947 and lived a faithful member until death.

Dike Blackburn

 

By request of the family I'll try to write the obituary of a loving brother, also a brother-in-law, a son of Jobe and Marnen Blackburn.  He was sixty eight years old at death, was married to Orie McCoy and to this union were born nine children,.  One daughter preceded him in death, leaving three sons and five daughters, along with Mother to mourn his loss.  He also leaves four brothers and seven sisters.  He joined the Regular Baptist Church and placed his membership with the Leanah Church.  In the year of 1934 Brother Dike was ordained to the ministry.

Sally (Pauley) Jackson

 

Sister Sally (Pauley) Jackson, born May 15, 1878, deceased this life January 13, 1952.  She was the daughter of William C. and Nancy (Williamson) Pauley, and was united in marriage to Dr. John Jackson the date unknown.  To this union were born 2 sons.  Her husband preceded her in death.  Sister Jackson taught school several years before her marriage.  She joined the Regular Baptist Church in the year of 1896.  She and her father were baptized and placed their membership with the Bent Branch Church, where their names still remain.

Mintie (Hinkle) Robinett

 

She was born April 30, 1874 and went to her rest May 8, 1953.  She was the daughter of the late Bily and Mary (Williamson) Hinkle, and was united in marriage to W. M. Robinett, who preceded her in death.  To this union were born 10 children, one died in infancy, i are still living, names as follows:  Lilburn, Tobie, Lee, Marvin, Eldon, Inez, John, Eula and Fred.

 

She also leaves 35 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, one whole brother Landon Hinkle, three half-brothers, Estill, George and Clarence Hinkle, one half-sister, Mrs Sarrah Jane Young.  Grandmother joined the Regular Baptist Church and placed her membership with the Pilgrim's Home Church, where she remained a faithful member until God called her away.

Robinson Maynard

 

Uncle Robinson Maynard was born February 28, 1875, departed this life February 23, 1953.  He suffered a stroke in August, 1952 and was bedfast the remainder of his life.

 

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Mrs. Oma Maynard, 11 children, five girls, namely:  Mrs Boyd Burris, Mrs,. Condor Stotridge, Mrs. Fred Moon, Maggie and Wilma Lee Maynard; Six boys: Russel, John Ferrell, J. C., Bobby and Hi Maynard.

Florence Ledson

 

Florence (Clark) Ledson, who was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs Mayjor Clark, born June 25, 1899, deceased this life October 3, 1949.  She was united in marriage to Marion C. Ledson, December 12, 1914, and to this union were born 6 children, namely:  Bertha Smith, Dora Mayburry, Mable Hall, Sinda Floyd, Leon and Junior Ledson.  She leaves three brothers and one sister, as follows:  Mayjor Clark, Jr., Leon and Joe Clark, and Rhoda Thompson.

 

Sister Ledson joined the Regular Baptist  Church in August 1942, and placed her membership with the Bethany Church but was unable to attend very much because of her affliction.
