Dear Becky,

In looking for collateral families for my husband's line I came across your website and the info for Sherman C. Fishpaw/Fishpaugh.

His wife Emily was a sister to my husband's mother. Her maiden name was Toensing and she was born in Fort Wayne (Allen) IN, not Ireland as stated on the 1920 OH Census. According to handwritten notes on the back of my husbands parents marriage license, written by his mother, Emily married S. C. Fishpaw in Reynoldsburg (Franklin) Ohio. I found the family on the 1920 census living on Broad Street in Truro Township. E.D. 304 page 4A. Living with them at the time was a boarder and brother-in-law Eric Magnusson and his wife Charlotte Toensing and a sister-in-law Clara Toensing.

According to Lillian Toensing Jaeger's notes Sherman and Emily Fishpaw had 3 girls Eileen who married Cyril Foster and had a child Barbara. The other girls were Jane and Marilyn. I think that perhaps Jane was Virginia Jane.

The obituary for Sherman in the Tampa Tribune listed two daughters, Eileen foster and Jane Williams. I believe they are the daughters of Sherman and Emily. Emily died in 1951.

Dear Ms Rutherford
I will be glad to help[ you in any way I can in trying to locate information on Mr. Fishpaw. It may take me a little time to gather up much as I am disabled and must work inside the limitations placed upon me by my illness. Already I can tell you that his obituary appeared in The Tampa Tribune 24 May 1964. He was 75 years old and it was on page A6. When I have a chance to go to the University of South Florida Library I will try to obtain a copy of it. They have the best set of films of the tribune short of the paper itself. When I have other news I will contact you again. I noticed you also are looking into the Coe Family, would that be the family of our late States Att.?
Best to all.

I am a volunteer at the local Family History Center every Wednesday morning, and I took some time today to try a few things regarding Sherman Carlos. I have microfilm copies of the Franklin Co., Ohio birth records 1867-1908 and the Fairfield Co., Ohio birth records 1867-1908 on indefinite loan at the FHC. I did not find Sherman Carlos Fishpaw/Fishbaugh in either one of them. I saw a lot of Fishpaw, male or Fishbaugh, male entries, but that doesn't do us much good right now.

Hi Becky,

Just got home from Salt Lake this evening. I didn't do any thing with your Miller problem, to many Millers. I did, however, FIND Carlos S. Fishpaw residing with his parents, Charles H. & Amanda, in Reynoldsburg, Truro Twp., Franklin Co., Ohio on the 1900 Census. Charles and "Manda" were in Etna Twp., Licking Co. in 1880. From the census records, the names of some of their other children were Dora, Alonzo, John, and Emery K. By the 1920 Census Sherman has a different wife, Emily - born in Ireland. Did Goldie die, or did they divorce? Made photo copies of the census pages for you, I just need to know where to send them.

On page 63 of the Franklin Co., Ohio Cemetery book Vol. III - Jefferson and Truro Townships you will filnd that Amanda C., Charles H. (Civil War Vet.), and Alonzo A. died in 1925, 1930 and 1940 respectively, so you shoud be able to get copies of their death certificates from the Ohio Historical Society.

According the the 1900 Census Sherman/Carlos was born in November of 1887, so we should be able to find him in either the Licking Co. or the Franklin Co. Birth Records. Maybe I can try that on Wednesday.

At this point I do not know who Charles H. belongs to and it seems Tom doesn't either. At least we know a little bit more than we did before.

Happy hunting,
Linda

Hi Becky,

Well, with the month and year of birth from the 1900 Census for Sherman Carlos/Carlos Sherman, I tried the Franklin Co. Birth Records microfilm, the Licking Co. Birth Records microfilm, and the Fairfield Co. Birth Records microfilm (have copies on indefinite loan from Salt Lake). Could not find him! I know the counties had delayed birth records, but have only seen microfilm copies of Licking County's available from the Family History Library in Salt Lake. Maybe Franklin Co. has one for him. Sheman would need a birth certificate, original or delayed, if he applied for a Social Security number, but maybe he didn't do that. Maybe you can get an idea of when and where he died through his two daughters by his second marriage.

Yes, the Charles, son of Jesse and Phoebe (Burnside) Fishpaw is the correct age to be your Charles H., and even better, he is living in the right place at the right time. "Methodism in Pickerington, O. 1812-1905" says Charles, son of Jesse and Phoebe, was living in Reynoldsburg in 1905.

When we made a research trip to Ohio about 8 years ago, we were told to be sure to see the book "Methodism in Pickerington ...". The only copy I was told about was in the Pickerington Library, and they kept it locked up, so I had to request it.

I had some information in my data base about Jesse Jr. and his children, mostly from "Methodism in Pickerington ...", and a few other bits and pieces, so will send printouts of that to you.

When I was in Fairfield Co. 8 years ago, the library in Lancaster (that has the Fairfield Co. Chapters genealogy collection and has been undergoing renovations recently) had a Burnside(s) genealogy, "The descendants of Andrew Burnside" by Dale S. Landon HC 929.2 Bur c.1, that you might want to check for Phoebe Burnside. I got some information out of it for Miller and Maranda/Miranda (Mason) Burnsides. I am thinking that Phoebe could be Miller's sister. If so, I didn't copy enough pages, or Mr. Landon didn't
know. It was not real complete, some lines had a lot of info. and others very little. If you find Phoebe, you might want to try to verify the details. Mr. Landon says Miller and Maranda (Mason) Burnsides purchased land in Hardin Co. in 1885. The land record in Hardin Co. he refers to is for Millie (Gilmore) Burnside(s), not Miller Burnsides, and she is Miller and Maranda Burnsides daughter-in-law. I am pretty sure Miller died in Fairfield Co. between 1864 and 1870, and I have Marandas death record in Fairfield Co. in 1881 (she is listed as a widow in the death record).

Thank you for the descendants listing for Jesse Fishpaw. Did you get that information from Tom's web site? I had browsed through his Fishbaugh/paugh/paws, but that is all. I can't help but wonder if the
Fishpaws and the Taylors came from Maryland together. Sarah Woodruff's mother was a Taylor according to "Methodism in Pickerington ...". I am a bit confused about the listing of two marriages for Moridaci Fishpaw to (1) Margaret Taylor and (2) Elenore Mason. I only have the date of the marriage
to Elenore/Ellen Mason, and I know that her mother was Margaret (Taylor) Mason ... hmmmm.

John ?N.? Mason, husband of Ann Fishpaw, was Elenore/Ellen (Mason) Fishpaw's brother. In the descendants listing you gave me the parents and grandparents of Jacob Taylor Ebright who married Caroline Handshey (not Handsbey) and Caroline was Elenore/Ellen (Mason) Fishpaw's and John ?N.?
Mason's niece.

Maranda (Mason) Burnsides (not in Fishpaw descendants) was Elenore (Mason) Fishpaw and John ?N.? Mason's sister. Maranda's husband, Miller Burnsides, and James Riley Burnside (in the Fishpaw desc.) were brothers according to Mr. Landon (children of James & Charlotte [Miller] Burnsides and their
grandmother was Phoebe [McNabb] Burnside). It will be interesting to see how Phoebe was related to them.

Happy hunting,
Linda

Of, I forgot to tell you. Sherman C. was working for the Rail Road in 1920, so that is possibly why you didn't find him in the S.S.D.I.
