Upon the arrival of the railroad, it was necessary to establish a telegraph office, either at Pataskala or Columbia Center, and there was a strife between them as to which should get it. As Mr. Elliott offered a room free of rent for that purpose, Pataskala received the office and has retained it. John Stout was the first operator. The town grew and prospered, soon outstripping its rival, and is now a place of six hundred and thirty-four inhabitants, by the census of 1880. It contains four large stores, each carrying a general assortment of goods, namely, Mead .Sz Youmans, Baird Brothers, Miner Hildreth and Dean Ashbrook. Thomas . Hunt keeps a hardware store and J. W. Burnside, drugs and a meat market. There are, besides, a shoe store, a hotel, and the usual proportion of shops and people engaged in mechanical pursuits.

Beside the Presbyterian there are two churches in Pataskala-the Methodist and United Brethren. The former is the second Methodist church organization in the township, and emanated from what is known as the "Lima Methodist church." This latter church is one of the olden, if not the oldest, in the township. It was probably organized some years prior to the organization of the Presbyterian. It is yet in a flourishing condition and occupies a good church building located on Muddy fork, a mile or more northwest of the center of the township. When the railroad came through, about 1852, a few of its members, who were compelled to travel some distance to church, concluded to organize a second class in Pataskala, then just laid out. The organization was effected in 1853 or 1854 by Rev. Henry Lonnis, with sixteen members, among whom were the following: Daniel Conine and wife, Henry Meade and wife, Jesse S. Green and wife, Thomas Parker and wife, Calvin Dibble and wife, and Luman Dibble, the last of whom was the first class leader.

THE HISTORY OF UNION COUNTY OHIO,
CHICAGO: W. H. BEERS & CO. 1883.
ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-FOURTH OHIO INFANTRY.

Under the President's call of July, 1864, for troops to serve for one year, two full companies were recruited in Union County. Leaving Marysville for Camp Chase on the 31st of August, they were assigned as Companies B and C, of the One Hundred and Seventy-fourth Ohio Infantry.

The original commissioned officers of Company B were U. D. Cole, Captain; Peter Hill, First Lieutenant, and George Harriman, Second Lieutenant. During its term of service, this company lost five killed in battle, six wounded, and twelve died in hospitals.

Company C was mustered in under the following commissioned officers: William H. Robb, Captain; W. B. Brown, First Lieutenant, and Joseph Swartz, Second Lieutenant.

Capt. Robb was discharged on account of I wounds received at Murfreesboro, and Lieut. Brown was then promoted Captain, and was in command of the company until wounded at Kingston, March 10, 1865, after which the command devolved on Lieut. T. B. Myers

Company C lost eight of its members on the field and in the hospitals, and fourteen wounded. Union County was represented among the field and staff officers of this regiment by A. J. Sterling, who served as Lieutenant Colonel from the organization of the regiment until its muster out.

The One Hundred and Seventy-fourth Ohio was organized September 21, 1864, under Col. John S. Jones, and, on the 23d, left Ohio for Nashville, Tenn., to report to Maj. Gen. W. T. Sherman, then commanding the Military

Division of the Mississippi. On arrival Nashville, orders were received to proceed to Murfreesboro, which was then threatened by Forrest's rebel cavalry.

The regiment remained at Murfreesboro until October 27, when it moved to Decatur, Ala. and assisted in defending that garrison from an attack made by Hood's advance. After a movement to the month of Elk Creek and back again, the One Hundred rind Seventy-fourth remained at Decatur, until recalled to Murfreesboro to participate in the investment of that stronghold. It took an active and prominent part in the battle at Overalls's Creek, losing two officers wounded, six men killed, and thirty-eight wounded.

After this engagement the regiment was ordered on dress-parade and complimented in person by Gen. Rousseau for their gallantry. In the battle of the Cedars, it again distinguished itself by making a charge on the enemy's breastworks and capturing two cannons a stand of rebel colors, belonging to the First and Fourth Florida, and about two hundred prisoners. The regiment lost in this engagement one commissioned officer killed and seven wounded - four men killed and twenty-two wounded. It was complimented in general orders for its conduct on this occasion.

After having participated in all the fighting around Murfreesboro, the One Hundred and Seventy-fourth joined the Twenty-third Army Corps at Columbia, Tenn., and was assigned to the First Brigade, First Division of that corps In January, 1866, it moved to Washington City, where it remained in camp until February 21, then proceeded to North Carolina, and joining the forces under Gen. Cox, took a conspicuous part in the battle of Five Forks, a Kingston.

On the 10th of March it successfully resisted a fierce attack made by Gen. Hoke. It, lost two officers wounded, four men killed and twenty-three wounded.

This was the last battle in which the regiment was engaged. It joined Sherman's forces at Goldsboro, and served under Gen. Schofield at Wadesboro, N. C., until mustered out a Charlotte, June 28, then returning to Columbus, Ohio, it was paid off, and discharged July 7, 1865.

Becky:

I can't remember if I ever responded to this e-mail message! If not, I
apologize for taking so long. We were hit by lightening about a week ago,
unfortunately via the phone line that we use for the internet, and the
modems in both my husband's and my computer were trashed! I bought a
replacement modem for my computer, but had to go out of town for 5 days, so
I am just now back up and running!

Anyway, thank you for the information on the Battee family. I'll let you
know what we are able to find out about the Battees that married into our
family. And we'll certainly be trying to learn more about the Stansbury
family, since Ruth Stansbury was a direct ancestor. It's kinda hard for me
to do much research from here in Florida, other than on the web, but my
sister still lives in the Baltimore area, so she plans to find out what she
can on the family in the library and Maryland Archives. I'll keep you advised!

Best regards,
Janet

Thanks so much for sharing this! My info from the 1982 Licking County
Genealogical Society family histories, pages 322-323, has him being the son of
William Henry Mead II, who founded a bank in Pataskala in 1888, and Isabelle
"Belle" Youmans. (I did not, however, have that good of a birth date for him.)
Right?
