Summerfield's leading merchant, if his many advertisements in local papers are to be believed, was C. H. Richey. In 1889, Richey took charge of the former Philpot & Co. store. Two years later, his business occupied three rooms and covered a total space of forty by fifty-five feet. Its advertised stock included, "dry goods, clothing, hats, caps, boots and shoes, ladies' and gents' furnishing goods, groceries, glassware, stoneware, queensware, [and] notions." Similar varietes of merchandise were carried by the long established general store of H. B. Faber and J. N. Danford and by Robert RUTHERFORD'S general store, which opened in 1887.
