SOURCE: WFT CD #3, Pedigree #3300 -- First census records indicated he was living in Attala Co MS in 1850. There is some confusion about his first two wives. Most believed that he had married sisters. He was educated for a Methodist Minister but could not harmonize their doctorine with the bible, so he did not accept the work of a Methodist Minister. He then took up carpentry work and was a good carpenter. He served in the Civil War and was with General Lee (not Robert E. Lee) at the surrender. He enlisted on 1 Jun 1864 and was discharged 1 May 1865.

Note from Joyce Sanders, Kosciusko, MS, 25 June 1979....
In the fall of 1866 Charles and Sarah J. Ryals sold their personal property at a public sale. He had already sold his land to Eli Croswell for a wagon and four oxen and $40 cash. Ryals had bought the land from Paton Dowell; Dowell died and Charles W. Ryals had then sold the land to Croswell. There are 24 pages of testimony and court proceedings (Attala Co MS) in Final Record Book D, page 253-277. It seems that Dowell had bought from Pierce Dicken and had not ever paid it off in full. It rocked on for years and finally the Supreme Court ordered the land sold so that Pierce Dicken could be recompensed. Testimony showed that Ryals knew the title was not clear but he sold it anway. and seems Crosswell knew the title was not clear, or rather that the land had not been paid for. I guess Ryals was leaving and Croswell did not care so they made a deal. The best I can figure out the land must have lain part in Attala and part in Leake County. Papers say that Charles and Sarah J. stayed around the neighborhood for about a week after the personal property sale. (Before moving to Belton, Bell Co, TX)
