ILLIAM JACKSON RYALS:
BIRTH: Family knowledge
DEATH: Civil War Pension; LA, S-4432
BURIAL: Choudrant, Lincoln Parish, LA; Pleasant Grove Cemetery - no marker.
MARRIAGE: Approximate date for 1st, from age of first child. Date of 2nd from military pension application.
RESIDENCE: Moved to LA in 1882.
CENSUS: 1860 Attala Co MS; 1870 unknown; 1880 Holmes Co MS; 1900 Lincoln Parish, LA.
MILITARY: CSA, Co K, 20th MS Vol. Infantry. On military muster rolls, he is first shown as enrolling as a private, age 23, in Capt. Duncan T. Patterson's Co. Russell's Regt. MS Vols. on 1 Jul 1861 in Kosciusko. This company subsequently became Co K, 20th Regt. He is shown as being present on muster rolls until the period of Aug 31-Sep 30, 1861 when he is listed as absent, in 9th MS Vols. Later muster rolls show him as being present in Co K, 20th MS Vols except for a time when he absented himself without leave from Jul 18-Oct 4, 1863 when he returned to his company. According to his testimony on his pension application, he was never wounded or taken prisoner and was discharged at the close of the war at Grenada, MS, Capt. O. Sylvanus commanding his company at the time.
A story told by William Jackson Ryals' grandson, Albert Clay Ryals and others - "William Jackson was a spy during the civil war. About to be exposed as a traitor, and facing possible death, he stole a train and escaped. His spying had taken him some place in the North, perhaps Ohio, where he learned to be a millwright. He said he didn't know why he ever came back South. He made good money and came back here to nothing. The civil war had set the South back at least 50 years." (From Mary Ann McAdory, 9 May 1997 & 18 Jul 1997)
OCCUPATION: Marvin Ryals had this to say in a letter dated 28 January 1976:
"I remember Papa (Jesse Tilden) saying he was born in Lauderdale County, near Meridian, Miss. That was when William Jackson was following the carpenter trade. In his early years of marriage, lots of reconstruction went on everywhere after the Civil War. That was undoubtedly what led him to Louisiana.
I only remember Papa saying they moved to Louisiana when he was a very young child. Probably he was 4 or 5 years old then, because I believe that uncle Connie and aunt Allie both were born in Mississippi before they moved away. I remember Papa saying that William Jackson followed the carpenter work until he got so many children he had to start farming. That way he could put those boys to work. Or at least he couldn’t be gone away from home so much any more, as the carpenter business moved about from town to town, and settling down to raising their own foodstuff proved to be the wisest thing."
PERSONAL: Letter from Marvin Ryals dated 19 Jan 1976 (he had sent me photos of Eli Douglas and William Jackson Ryals)
"If you’ll notice -- no, I forgot that you probably never saw uncle Jim -- but uncle Jim (James Samuel to you) and my daddy (Jessie Tildon) and Connie, were more like their uncle Eli Douglas than their own father. That may be because grandpa William Jackson Ryals was -- you might say -- on his death bed when this picture was made.
These boys of William Jackson and Martha Ann’s were exceptionally viral and handsome men. Papa was the runt of the three but he was a very nice size, and strong as an ox. Papa never knew how much he couldn’t lift...They were goodlooking, and I always thought that uncle Jim and Papa had the countenance of ‘Thunder!’ They could look at you in a way that suggested ‘Iron’ or ‘Steel.’ I used to be terrified at them when I was five or six years old. Uncle Jim lived down the road about a hundred yards from us...sometimes (or every time) when they met in the road, neither would give ground for the other to walk around...That’s where I got that impression of the countenance. They looked like two bears meeting up out there, and such a tussle! I never saw the like... I thought they were angry back then... it was the grimaces on ther faces... but now I know the two were very fond of each other."

Notes for M
ARTHA ANN DOUGLAS:
DEATH: From Marvin Ryals in a letter dated 20 Jan 1976 - As a boy his father lived about two miles from Choudrant, LA, Lincoln Co. He spoke of fishing on Choudrant Creek. There is an old church, Pleasant Grove, where Martha Douglas Ryals was buried. The church was also used as a school when Larkin was young. If Martha Ann is buried here, her grave is unmarked.
PARENTS: I received a letter from Audrey Douglas Dabbs in 1978 in which she included the family record of Eli S. Douglas and she states, "This is Aunt Martha Ann's brother's family." She also included in this letter photos of William Jackson Ryals and Eli and his wife. Audrey and her cousin, Marvin Ryals did some research together. I have a letter (dated 19 Jan 1976) from Marvin telling about a trip the two of them made to a library to look at census records. This is what he says, "Audrey Dabbs (she was a Douglas) went with me to Carroll County, near Kosciusko, and we got this census record about three years ago. This census gives the grandfather of Papa and uncle Jim on the Douglas side. Here is the copy:" [he includes a copy of the 1850 Carroll Co MS census of the Jeptha Douglas family and has added Mary (Smith) Douglas' maiden name and added Eli who wasn't born until after the census was enumerated] "Eli's name wasn't on the census report because he was born a few days after the information was gathered. I added his name... he was born in 1850... I underscored Martha Ann's name you'll notice... She was Jewel's and my grandmother... "
Further proof of parents: From Patsy Kimsey <patsyk@seark.net> "My grandmother died in 1974 and I was given all her pictures... Among the pictures, I found a copy of a very old picture of a lady and man standing in front of a dark curtain. The man was white haired and had a beard and the lady was dressed in a dark skirt and white blouse. On the back of the picture was written in my grandfather's handwriting, "My great uncle, William Jackson Ryals." Patsy's GGgrandmother was Mary Ann Douglas, sister of Martha Ann. Patsy has since identified her photo as being the same as the one we have of William Jackson Ryals and his second wife, Saphronia Adams.
