Notes for J
ESSE TILDEN RYALS:
DEATH/BURIAL: Buried Plattsburg, Winston Co, MS (Jesse lived in Neshoba Co, near the county line and went to church in Winston Co -- Mary Ann McAdory)
CENSUS: 1910 Neshoba Co MS, Fusky Voting Precinct, Beat 5
SOURCE: WWI Draft Registration records, Neshoba Co, MS
SOURCE: David Alan Ryals; 17613 S. Rockwell; Homewood, IL 60430 - letter received 21 Jun 1997 - "From age 4 to 14 I lived with my grandfather, Jessie Tilden Ryals on his farm in north Neshoba County about 3/4 miles from the Winston County line. Grandpa never did volunteer any information about his family, but I was always following him around asking questions and he would always answer my questions. I remember very clearly asking him one time at the barn, who his father was: He answered, William Jackson Ryals, giving the full name. Then I asked who his grandpa was and he replied, Joseph Jepsie Ryals."
SOURCE: Mary Ann McAdory; 10021 Road 585; Philadelphia, MS 39350 - letter received 18 Jul 1997 -- "My Grandpa Ryals, Jessie Tilden, ran away from his home in Louisiana at a very early age (less than 14 years old) and headed to Mississippi where he had originally come from. He paid a black man (one source says he gave him his shoes, another his overcoat, possibly both) to bring him across the Mississippi River in a rowboat. (from stories handed down by cousins, brothers & grandpa) He then became a 'hobo' and caught a freight train for the rest of the journey." (As told to her by Jessie Tilden Ryals)
> "A neighbor once said that during the Depression, Grandpa (Jessie Tilden Ryals) saved his family by giving them a milk cow to get through the winter." (As told to her by Bonnie Rachel Ryals)
> "To say that my grandpa was made of 'tough stuff' was at the very least putting it mildly. He once cut his foot open with an axe, and calmly hunted up a needle and thread and sewed it up himself."
> Story told to Mary Ann by Gene Ryals -- "When we were old enough to plow the fields with Granny Lou and Granny Sue (family mules? BBR), Grandpa gave Bill (Wilburn D. Lee, son of Mary Ryals Lee), James (brother of Gene - both sons of Marvin), and myself an acre of cotton in return for working in the fields through the summer. These were the top three acres in the eight-acre field. Billy's acre was the one nearest the barn. Cotton plants near that area would grow as high as you could reach -- unusual for Neshoba County. But the cotton plants in that area put so much nutrients and energy into growing those big stalks that they didn't bear extra cotton. Our respective areas would be picked and ginned separately, so that we each had a bale of cotton to sell at harvest time. It was better than having a job in town. That left Grandpa with about five acres to buy fertilizer, pay other expenses and run the farm for a year. I questioned Grandpa about this once, but he refused to let me help pay the expenses."

ARTHA ELIZABETH BREAZEALE:

SOURCE: David Alan Ryals; 17613 S. Rockwell; Homewood, IL 60430 - letter received 21 Jun 1997 - stated that Martha Elizabeth Breazeale was called "Mattie".
PERSONAL: From Mary Ann McAdory, letter dated 24 Aug 1998 - My sister Bonnie recently shared a story about my grandmother with me. She said that the first time Grandma ever saw car lights at night she was out on her front porch and yelled out, "Jesse, come here quick. Jim's mill is running away!" (Jim being Jesse's brother, James Samuel - BBR)

Children of J
ESSE RYALS and JULIA REYNOLDS are:
  i.   DELBERT DECATUR5 RYALS, b. 11 Apr 1896, MS; d. 05 Dec 1920.
  Notes for DELBERT DECATUR RYALS:
DEATH/BURIAL: Info from Homer Ryals Jr. Mary Ann McAdory note: Delbert went off to WWI and came home sick with TB.
MARRIAGE: AAI CD #5; applied for license to marry Lessie F. Gilbert in Neshoba Co 27 Aug 1917, but no return. (just about the same time he registered for the draft in WWI - BBR) Mary Ann McAdory (dau of Marvin Ryals) note: she was always told that Delbert never married. Her brother told her that once he and his father were at the cemetery, when he noticed a flower on Delbert's grave. Marvin told him that someone put one there each year and maybe he had a girlfriend. Mary Ann speculates that Delbert might have been persuaded to wait on marriage until after he came home from the war and then was too sick.
PERSONAL: Delbert was apparently a very soft spoken, tender hearted person. Those who remembered him years later couldn't say his name without a tear in their eye. (Mary Ann McAdory)
MILITARY: WWI Draft Registration -- Ryals, Delbert Dexter born 11 Apr 1896; race W; birthplace Plattsburg MS; registered Neshoba MS

ii.   ALBERT CLAY RYALS, b. 11 Feb 1898, Neshoba Co, MS; d. 09 Nov 1969; m. (1) LURA VOWELL, 16 Jan 1916, Neshoba Co, MS; m. (2) MARY ERMA LEE, 01 Aug 1920, Neshoba Co, MS.
  Notes for ALBERT CLAY RYALS:
DEATH/BURIAL: Death date from Homer Ryals Jr. Buried Sandhill Cemetery, Neshoba Co MS - info from Mary Ann McAdory.
MARRIAGE: AAI CD #5.
CHILDREN: Albert & Erma raised a niece of Erma's named Joyce Manning.
PERSONAL: My Uncle Albert was always getting into something he shouldn't. The Baptist Church strictly didn't condone dancing in any form. Uncle Albert loved to dance or go to dances and meet all the pretty girls in the county. If you were caught at a dance or even suspected of dancing, you were given three opportunities to come before the church and ask for forgiveness. If you didn't, the church withdrew fellowship and you were no longer considered a part of that church. One year, Uncle Albert got caught right at the first of the dance season (just after the crops were laid by). The call of the pretty girls was just too strong. He let all three chances to go before the church slide by and old Pearl Valley Baptist withdrew fellowship from him. (Notes from records in Neshoba County Library of Old Pearl Valley Baptist). Also, on 16 Jan 1916, he took out a license to marry Lura Vowell. Lura loved the dances and what my grandparents considered, "the wild life." Grandpa got word of this and took Uncle Albert to a boarding school in Macon, MS. In those days boarding schools (or some of them) were about as strict as a reformatory. On the way to Tuscaloosa, AL in 1957, Mama (my Aunt Mary who raised me and I called Mama) pointed out this big building -- almost like an antebellum home, and said, "That is were Albert went to school." I asked why he went to school so far away from home and was told the story of Albert and Lura. Incidentally, Lura married a Boatner and lived less than a mile from where we lived. (Mary Ann McAdory letter dated 9 Nov 1999)

I would guess about 13. On cold winter mornings the nightime fires had burned out in the fireplaces and the house was more than chilly, it was COLD. Mama stayed warm thru the night with mounds of cover and really wanted to stay put until her father had warmed the house with the morning fires. One morning Mama was especially lazy and pretended to not hear Papaw's cries to get up and get ready for school. After he made several attempts to get her out of the bed, he found her covered up 'head-to-foot'. Without saying a word, he went outside to get an airpump. He quietly slipped into her room and eased an opening at the foot of her 'nest' and blasted her with cold air. She was up then - running for the fireplace."
