Notes for W
ILLIAM A. HILBURN:
CHILDREN: Has other children. The two listed are the only ones I have personally researched. Have SOME info on the others in my files.
DEATH: Probably before 1830 - not found in 1830 TN census
CENSUS: 1790 Newberry Co SC, Ninety Six District -- William HILBURN, 1 m ov16 -- 1 m und 16 -- 6 females. Not found in later Newberry Co censuses. Believed to have moved to middle TN sometime before 1800. TN 1800 cenus is missing; only a part of Rutherford and Grainger Cos. exist for 1810. 1820 Maury Co TN -- William Hilburn, 1m 16-26; 1m 45&ov. 1f 45&ov. Not found 1830 TN.
RESIDENCE: 1790 to 1800 there was an island of settlement in middle TN with counties formed -- bounded by KY on the north and Indian lands on all other sides. It was to this area and in this time frame that William A. Hilburn moved his family from Newberry Co SC. In studying maps of county formation, it seems probable that William lived in at least three different locations in this area. The first record of him in TN occurs 1 May 1806, when William A. and Ambrose Hilburn signed a petition to the General Assembly of TN where "Citizens of the extension of Jackson County petition for a new county... beginning at the south west corner of Jackson where it may intersect Smith then east to the Standing Stone or opposite the same, thence south to the eastern half of the Tennessee Ridge, thence west on the said Ridge to intersect Rutherford or Wilson County or where you in your wisdom may deem best." By 4 Nov 1807, he may have moved further west to the Davidson Co area where a dau, Sally, married Robert Johnston. On 4 Apr 1809 another dau, Dorcas, married John Nivens in Davidson Co. In 1812, Davidson Co, William was listed in Capt. Henry's Militia Co -- enumeration of free male inhabitants. Ambrose Hilburn married Keziah Waglin in Davidson Co 1 Jul 1812 -- this is the last record of Ambrose in TN. Davidson Co and Williamson Co adjoined and at this point, it's unclear just which county William lived in -- maybe right on the Davidson/Williamson county line -- which could explain the next marriage records. Another probable dau, Polly married Hiram Campbell in Williamson Co on 22 Feb 1816. Still another, Nancy, married John Campbell on 8 Aug 1817 in Davidson Co. Son, Richard, married Elizabeth Campbell 26 Dec 1818 in Williamson Co and is enumerated in the 1820 census there. By the time the 1820 cenus was enumerated, William, his wife, and his last child at home, William B., had moved again and were in Maury Co which borders Williamson to the south. On 15 Aug 1821, a William Hilburn was a chain carrier on a survey in Perry Co. Since that was a pretty strenuous undertaking, I'm assuming this was the younger William B. Hilburn making his first trip to what would become his future home. About 1823, William B. Hilburn married Smitha Campbell -- no record has been found. It probably occurred in either Maury, Hickman or Perry counties, none of whom have existing marriage records for the time period. (All of these Hilburn/Campbell marriages are believed to have been between the children of William & Jane Hilburn and Richard & Rachel Campbell. Reasoning behind this theory: William & Jane are the ONLY Hilburn family present in this area in this time period other than Ambrose Sr. There is the 1790 Newberry census showing that William and Jane had daughters who were of marriageable age when these marriages occurred and no evidence that Ambrose did. Richard Campbell was a Revolutionary War soldier and both he and Rachel received pensions for that service. Included in the pension applications was a bible record listing their children's names and birthdates. All of the Campbell names who married Hilburns were present with the appropriate ages. The two families were living in the same areas. Richard Campbell died in Hickman Co TN in 1844 and his descendants lived in both Perry and Hickman counties. There was a continuing Hilburn/Campbell association -- lived as neighbors, owned adjoining land, witnessed deeds, used the same names for their children, moved together, etc.)
