Notes for Diane Allard: Per Dick Ryan in 2006: Diane's first husband, last name Handler, was someone she met in New York while she was going to nursing school at Columbia University. They were married only a short time and divorced, after their son Jon was born about 1956. Jon still lives in Fitchburg, with his wife Kim; they have no children. Diane married again; her second husband was also in New York, but he died not too long afterwards. Diane then moved back home to Leominster MA to be near her parents, Frank Allard and Dorothy Snow Allard. After moving back, she married Kenneth Healy and had another son, known as Kenny, who was about 16 when Diane died of ovarian cancer in the fall of 1989.
Darlene: Diane was diagnosed with ovarian cancer early in 1989. She went to the doctor when she felt a lump in her abdomen. Being a nurse, she realized right away that it was a problem. She fought bravely. Dick and I last visited her in July 1989 at her home in Leominster. It was a time when we were trying to have a baby. On the Sunday morning of our visit, I confided in Diane that the ovulation tester showed that I was ovulating and that I needed to find some time alone with Dick. She "conspired" with me for Dick and me to take a nap together that afternoon. The following Friday my doctor tested my blood just to see whether the ovulation drug had worked that month and told me I was pregnant already. I was having morning sickness during Diane's funeral only a month or two later. I have always felt that Kevin Ryan was Diane's parting gift to Dick and me.
