My Paternal Great Grandfather, Thomas Henry Whaley was born March 31, 1865 to Thomas F. & Mary Ann (Howell) Whaley in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas, and came to the Indian Territory in 1874, settling at a small place called Stewart, now Thackerville,on the Red River.(interview taken on July 19, 1937) He lived there about eight years, removing to Atwood in 1884, and farmed there for several years.
Tom was a member of the Anti-horse Thief Horsemen.
He married Nancy Ellen Lucas~daughter of James Oliver Lucas and Mozella F.(Davenport)Lucas.
They had only been married a few hours when they came for him to go on a trip, after telling his wife he would be back in a few hours, he returned in eight days.
He farmed until 1895 when he was appointed a U.S.Deputy Marshall in 1917 ( Marshall Enloe)signed his commission, working out of McAlester. He arrested the first man ever hanged in Indian Territory.
Tom served from 1895 to 1919, and was appointed again. He had a record of arresting more men during his term than any other man.
He shot first and asked questions later, and I have heard stories to support that assumption...
Other people that knew him or of him would later describe him as a good man, kind..with a love for family & children.
Their children were...
Orb Webster Whaley...b.06 October, 1886 Indian Territory, OK.
*Harve Hilton Whaley..b.26 December,1887 Indian Territory, OK.
Thomas H. Whaley.....b.June 1893
Paul Whaley..........b.1894 Indian Territory, OK.
