On a cold blustery 21st January 1876, the good ship Pomona set sail from Ireland bound for New Zealand, and among the passengers were the Ryan family who were leaving their home Athassel Abbey (“The Abbey”) in Golden, Tipperary and as James was 51 it is presumed that his parents, James and Eliza (nee Hewitt) were no longer living. They arrived in Bluff on 14 April 1876 after three months at sea. James was accompanied by his wife Ellen daughter of Patrick and Mary Condon (nee Hackett) and sons Patrick, James and daughter Mary. Another daughter Elizabeth had married a Quinlan in Ireland and emigrated to America. |
