* Ryan Family, Southland New Zealand*

Updated March 25, 2010

On a cold blustery 21st January 1876, the good ship Pomona set sail from Ireland bound for New Zealand, and among the passengers were the Ryan family who were leaving their home Athassel Abbey (“The Abbey”) in Golden, Tipperary and as James was 51 it is presumed that his parents, James and Eliza (nee Hewitt) were no longer living. They arrived in Bluff on 14 April 1876 after three months at sea. James was accompanied by his wife Ellen (62) daughter of Patrick and Mary Condon (nee Hackett) and sons Patrick (20) and his wife Mary (28) (nee Ryan – no relation!), James (21) and daughter Mary 25. Another daughter Elizabeth had married a Quinlan in Ireland and emigrated to America.

Mary married a John Kerr from Bluff, a cabinet maker and undertaker, she latter went to America, with her three children, to live with her sister Elizabeth. James lived with his family at Heddon Bush, just along from the school, until he married Margaret Peattie Pattison Clark in 1890 and later settled at “Tatarepo”, Bayswater near Otautau.

Patrick, (latter known as The gaffer), with his wife Mary (daughter of James and Johanna Ryan (nee Madden)) and two children Patrick 2 years old and Ellen lived at Heddon Bush before settling at "Tim Boon" on Ryan Road, Oreti, near Winton.

James died 30 June 1893. Ellen died 31 August 1894. Mary died 16 July 1927 and Patrick died 19 Feb 1928. All are buried in the Old Winton Cemetery, right near the main road. A headstone has now been erected and was unveiled on Sunday 21 March 2010 attended by about 90 Ryan family members.
