Leland (Leo) Wescot Wood and Mary Louise Faulman were Irene Rybkowski’s mother and father. My mother kept the Wood and Faulman family pictures and papers from generations past. After she died in 1990, I began to look through the things she kept and while digging through the piles of post cards, pictures, and other items I decided I should pass the information on to my family.

I have put as much as I know down on paper so that my children and their descendants will have a written history of their ancestors. The information is based on letters, death certificates, marriage licenses, written stories; hours spent searching libraries, the Internet, interviews with my aunts and uncles, and what I recall while growing up. There are pictures dating back to the 1850’s and records that trace my ancestors back several hundred years on my maternal grandfathers side of the family.

When I began this project in 1990, I could only trace my ancestor back to my maternal great-grandparents. Little did I know I would become involved in an extensive search going back hundreds of years. After two years of research, I have been able to document that I am the descendant of Edward Doty, one of the first pilgrims to come to America on the Mayflower in 1620. On February 19, 2007, I was certified by The General Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Michigan Mayflower Society as a descendant of Edward Doty.

Edward Doty's descendants have been documented and detailed in many books; book published by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants in 1996 entitled the Edward Doty of the Mayflower, "Mayflower Families through Five Generations, Volume 11, Parts 1 & 2." There are, also, many websites dealing with the Pilgrims and a book called The Doty-Doten Family.

Over 400 years of the Doty family history, the story of the Mayflower and the Plymouth settlement can be found at the end of this document.
