Local Poet Writes Religious Verse
By Stephen J, Kraus
In a small but comfortable retirement home which is nestled in the hardwoods and pine trees overlooking Big Twin Lake, lives a poet. Not just any poet, though, but muse-inspired writer who brings to life the often considered myth-like characters of the Bible. Her name is Maxine Rugg Ryckman, and for her, happiness comes from writing about the everyday hopes, toils, and aspirations of these religious figures.
"I know it's sometimes hard to imagine, but Adam and Eve were real people, and they had to cope with the same kinds of problems that you and I face today," she said in an interview at her home."That's what I like to write about-the way these Bible figures may have felt about their lives."
"Now take Adam and Eve for example. What do you think it was like for them after they were put out of the Garden of Eden?"Ryckman has written a poem, which is part of a collection of verse dealing with various Bible characters, in which she tries to recreate how Eve may have felt. The poem's entitled, "After the Garden", and , below, are a few lines from that poem.
And then she hurried about
Preparing the food for the evening
meal,
For Adam would be coming home,
(He was weeding the field behind the
hill)
Eve carefully turned the leg of lamb
Roasting since noon upon a spit
And she brushed hot ashes from her
baking stone,
And placed on it the dough she'd
mixed.
And she smiled to herself, remem-
bering
How it had been way back when
They'd first left the Garden of Eden,
She'd burn the bread time and over
again.
And dear, dear Adam, who was used to
Eden,
Worked so hard from morn 'til night,
Raising crops of lentils and wheat and
barley,
Often ruined by drought, strong winds
and blight
. . . She said that her philosophy or message conveyed through poetry is to try "to bring out in my poetry that people are most happy and content when they are fulfilling God's plan here on earth"
. . . Maxine is a native of this area with deep roots in Kalkaska County. She was born September 30, 1919 in the now abandoned Kalkaska Jail as her father was sheriff at the time. Her father's name was Rugg and her mother was a Van Buren from the Rapid City area. Both were descendants of early settlers in Kalkaska County.
Her first published piece, "Lori is Free", appeared in the Salvation Army's magazine, "The War Cry" in March 1978.It is a short story, and the subject matter deals with a grief-stricken mother, who, after losing a daughter, finds peace in God.

JIM RYCKMAN WAS THE FIRST TO ARRIVE AT OUR BASKETBALL SESSIONS ON SATURDAY MORNINGS, HE WAS A GOOD BALLPLAYER AND HAD A QUIET ENTHUSIASM.AFTER A GAME IN WHICH HE EXCELLED (SCORING AT LEAST 2 OR 3 THREE POINTERS).WE TOOK A BREAK TO SET UP TEAMS FOR ANOTHER GAME."I GOT YOU" JIM SAID, TO JOE ALLEN, AS HE READIED FOR HIS GAME DEFENSE, THEN HE COLLAPSED.EFFORTS TO REVIE JIM WERE FUTILE, AS PLAYERS, POOL LIFEGUARDS, FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL AND THE EMT TRIED FOR APPROXIMATELY THIRTY MINUTES, BEFORE TRANSPORTING JIM TO THE EAST COOPER MEDICAL HOSPITAL. Notes for BARBARA RUTH NUMMER: From: Traverse City Record Eagle, November 22, 1964. Barbara Nummer Ryckman and the two children from the marriage; James Gerald & Carlene Sue died in a house fire on November 21, 1964. Officials sought today to determine the origin and cause of a Kalkaska house fire Saturday afternoon in which a 20 year old housewife and her two young children died. Victims of the fast-burning blaze were Mrs. James (Barbara Ruth) Ryckman, James Gerald, 4, and Carlene Sue, 2.Kalkaska sheriff's department said Mrs. Ryckman died of burns and that the two children suffocated despite efforts at rescue by neighbors and fireman. The department said next door neighbor, Leo Blaisdell, 18, made his way into the burning interior of the house and brought Mrs. Ryckman out and that others managed to reach the two children before flames reached the living room of the house in which they were found.Mrs. Ryckman was found in a corridor in the home, the department said.Blaisdell sustained burns and cuts in his rescue efforts, the sheriff's office reported. Funeral services for the three fire victims will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Schwartz funeral home in Kalkaska, Rev. Elmer Hoats officiating, with burial in Kalkaska Evergreen cemetery. Survivors include: the husband and father; mother & grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Eder of Detroit, and father and Grandfather, Arthur Nummer of Detroit; a brother and uncle, Donald Nummer of Detroit; and other relatives. Mrs. Ryckman was born January 19, 1944, in Detroit and was married to Mr. Ryckman in Kalkaska. Leader and Kalkaskian, Kalkaska, MI., 26 Nov 1964: Fire claims lives. A tragic fire here late Saturday afternoon took the lives of a young mother and her two small children. The victims were Mrs. James Ryckman (Barbara Nummer) and children, James about 4 years and Carlene about 3 years. The alarm was sounded at 4:42 P.M. Before the firemen arrived a neighbor of the Ryckmans, Leo Blaisdell, Jf., had recovered the body of Mrs. Ryckman which was found near the door in the kitchen. The front entrance to the house was not used and was locked and had a piece of furniture in front of it. Blaisdell received sever scalp burns and was hospitalized over night. It was reported to the Sheriffs Dept, that Mrs. Ryckman was seen outside the building and re-entered the burning building to rescue the children. Firemen immediately forced their way in the front entrance and recovered the bodies of the two children. Fireman Duane Thomas suffered severe smoke inhalation and was hospitalized over night, Coroner Keith Schwartz said it appeared Mrs. Ryckman had died of burns received and the two children, who were believed to have been sleeping in the living room, to have died of suffocation. After careful study at the scene of the fire Monday, State Fire Marshal Nick Reachko of the Alpena Sate Police Post, attributed the cause of the fire to be a faulty chimney at which in one place a thimble holding the overheated pipe from the furnace, had separated from the chimney. Funeral arrangements and obituaries are found elsewhere on this page. At the request of the family a memorial fund has been established and anyone wishing to contribute toward it may contact John Weston.
