Notes for JOHN BARWIS I:
In 1628 John I bought a farm at New Cowper (pronounced Cooper) in the Parish of Holm Cultram in Cumberland. This is now in the parish of Holm St Cuthbert.New Cowper was then a cluster of six farms, but today (1988)) only four remain.Three of these are used for farming , the fourth wich was in need of extensive renovation, has been recently purchased by an engineer from Germany and his Scotish Wife. They are selling Classic cars from this location. The original Barwis home stood on its own, some distance from the main group, and has now been demolished.Prior to the state enforced disolution of the Monasteries, the property was part of the possesions of the Abbey of Holm Cultram. Its original name was New Cowbyre and it is so named in the oldest parish register of Holm Cultram.(1580 - 1596)
