Joel Anderson was born May 12, 1824, in Emanuel County - there has been some controversy as to who his parents were, but probably Joseph Anderson and Winnifred Hayes. He married Debbie or Dobie Powell July 24, 1842, in Emanuel County, and they were the parents of Uriah, Letitia, Susan, Phada "Sally", Aden, Elijah?, Sarah J., Elizabeth C., Steven, Deborah "Debbie", Nancy Lee, Martha, and Mastin (or Martin). Joel fought in the War Between the States and is shown here wearing his UCV medallion. They are buried at Oaky Grove Cemetery in Johnson County.
