The son of Seaborn Jones Saffold and his wife, Julia Smith Heard, Thomas Peter Saffold first married March 15, 1847, Mary Elizabeth Thomas, daughter of Stevens Thomas and Peninah Walton Jordan of Athens, GA; they were the parents of one son, Marion F. Saffold (1848-1864). Mary committed suicide March 29, 1848. On July 4, 1854, T.P. Saffold married Sarah Elizabeth Reid, daughter of Andrew Reid and Marianne Clopton of Eatonton, GA; they were the parents of William Reid, Anna Laura, Seaborn Goudeloch, Sidney Reid, Andrew Reid, Charles William, Albert Clopton, Thomas Peter, Jr., and Sarah Louise. Thomas Peter Saffold was an attorney, circuit judge, planter, and statesman; he was a delegate to Georgia's Secession Convention of 1861 and cast his vote for Georgia to leave the Union. When the war ended in 1865, he received a pardon from President Andrew Johnson. He immediately re-entered politics and was appointed by President Grant to the Board of Visitors for the Class of 1871 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Buried in City Cemetery, Madison, GA.
