Sarah was a daughter of Andrew Reid and Marianne Clopton of Eatonton, GA. Their beautiful old mansion still stands in Eatonton; Joel Chandler Harris, famous Georgia author, was born to the rear of the mansion in a servant cabin. Here on July 4, 1854, Sarah married Thomas Peter Saffold of Buckhead and Madison. They were the parents of nine children, two little sons dying during the War Between the States, as well as the son of Thomas' first marriage, due to lack of medicine because of the yankee blockade. When the yankees came to burn their home in Buckhead, Sarah refused to take her remaining children and leave the house; although the yankees shot through the house, they left without burning it. A silver candlestick with a bullet hole in it is still in the family.
