Dr. Saffold was born in Wilkes County, GA, a son of William Saffold, Revolutionary Soldier of Virginia, and his wife, Ann Goudeloch. He was the first doctor in Morgan County, Georgia, with a practice from Athens to Monticello. In 1818, he married Julia Smith Heard, daughter of Abram Heard and his wife, Nancy Coffee. Their children were William, Ann Heard, Thomas Peter, Isham Heard, Abram H., and Seaborn Jones, Jr.
