I hope I am not providing information you have already exchanged. TheAdams family into whic h Winifred Biffle married were actually a Dutch orGerman family out of Pennsylvania and not r elated to the John Hobbs Adamsfamily (with early roots in Northumberland Co VA).
I have long wondered myself whether the two families might have marriedinto the same Simpso n line, but I found no information that couldsubstantiate this. Like Adams, Simpson was/i s a fairly common name.

Hi Linda,
I sent you a reply about William Adams on an earlier email. Different
people.
I am intrigued by another name in your line. I am tracking down arather
extensive number of Adams families in SW VA, NW NC in the mid to late1700s
looking for a link backwards. I know I am connected to some of theseAdams
thru DNA testing: some I know, others I'm still learning about.
Do you know if Eleanor Simpson is related to Lydia Simpson, (fatherSamuel
Simpson) who was second wife to John Hobbs Adams (married 1789)?
Also, do you have any male family members in your line that have linksto
the Adams line that have tested their DNA?
BTW, I found the family you profiled in your prior email in "AdamsFamilies
of SE KY", D. Griffith, K. Parkin, 1986. It appears you already knowthat
source.
Thanks,
H. Adams

Margaret,

Thank you for bringing this information up about John Hobbs Adams. Ihave
seen where several people have mistakenly used John Hobbs Adams namewhen it
should have been this John Adams who lived in Rowan County, NC, hemarried
Winifred Bussell in Rowan County, NC and he died in Rowan County, NC.John
Hobbs Adams and John Adams from Rowan County, NC were two entirelydifferent men.

I suspect that this John Adams was born in Pennsylvania and that hisfather
came to America from Germany. I believe his father's name was JohannesAdam
and was later changed to John Adams. I have found a Johannes Adamlisted on
the early Philadelphia, PA census records for the years 1740, 1747, 1748and
1752. I have also found a Johannes Adam in the records of earlysettlers of
Rowan County, NC in "Occupations of Settlers on the Northwest Carolina
Frontier, 1747-1762", which I believe is the same person.

Which of these two Adams families are you related to?

Linda
I am related to the man known as John Hobbs Adams, by descent from hisbrother Daniel. Have n o idea where the middle name Hobbs came from andhave never seen evidence that he used a middl e initial, but the name is auseful tool.
At one time I did extensive research on John Adams who married Eve Smith, but no longer have t he material. I believe him to have been, as you say,Johannes Adams, a potter from Lancaster P A. He arrived in Rowan Co manyyears before John Hobbs Adams. Both men did at one time live i n thegeneral Rowan Co area -- John Hobbs Adams took vacant land with hisbrother Matthew and h is son in law Joshua Botts about 1778, butsubsequently moved on to Wilkes Co (or perhaps th e boundaries changed).John Adams and his brother Abraham lived near Eaton's Church (close toW ilkes/Surry/Rowan border area near Mulberry Fields) while John's sonBenjamin and his uncles I saac and Daniel Adams lived app 10 miles east, near Bryan's settlement. Indeed, Daniel's son E phraim married EllenderBryan, the sister of Rebecca Bryan Boone.

The Eleanor Simpson who married William Adams parents were WilliamSimpson
and Elizabeth Hocking and they were married 28 January 1768 Rowan Co.,North
Carolina. I'm sorry but I don't know of any connection between Eleanor
Simpson and Lydia Simpson.

I'm aware of the Adams DNA test group at Family Tree DNA, but I don'tknow
whether any male Adams from my Adams line have participated in the DNA
testing. I do not know the source that you mentioned in your previousemail, "Adams
Families of SE KY", D. Griffith, K. Parkin, 1986. My Adams ancestorslived
in Calloway and Graves counties, which are in what is called the Jackson
Purchase area of Kentucky. The Jackson Purchase area is the far westerncounties
of Kentucky.

I would be interested in the source of your information. I have doneyears of research in th e archives on this Adams line and have never seena reference to a name for his mother. The on ly reference to the Hobbssurname in the area from which this Adams family arises is to aneigh boring family some 25 years before the birth of John Adams inNorthumberland Co, before the Ad ams moved upcountry.
Any information very much appreciated.

Ron
There is no question that the Sarah Adams who married Cornelius Keatonwas the daughter of Jac ob Adams. In his 1807 will, Jacob named hisdaughter as Sarah Keaton and specifically direct s that a "negro boy" hehas willed to her not be at the disposal of her husband Cornelius Keat on.
Records at Henry Co (later Patrick Co) and at Fauquier Co demonstratethat Jacob is one of th e so-called Northern Neck Adams and likely abrother or cousin to John "Hobbs" Adams.
DNA and genealogical research have demonstrated that several of the Adamsmen in the Halifax/P ittsylvania/Henry/Patrick Co area were close cousinsand descended from the Northern Neck Adam s. However, there were -- as youhave noted -- several other Adams families, many with simila r names. Onesuch family, descended from William Adams of Charlotte Co VA has beenshown to hav e completely different DNA. There are several other Adamslines in that general area that ma y - or may not be -- related.
There are extensive land records in the parent counties of Halifax andPittsylvania counties t hat might help you -- many available online. Wefound that a good place to start was the vario us water courses and thenames of neighbors, as well as the direction in which they migrated.

Hi Sue,

I know nothing of Sarah's origins other than the census records statingshe
was born in Virginia. She was married in Patrick Va at the age 16, sothat
is probably where she was born. The marriage records available give no
information about parents, witnesses, etc., unfortunately. There were
several Adams families living in Patrick Va at that time, but I havebeen
unable to tie her to any of them. There is a Sarah Adams about theright age
in Patrick Va, but she is listed on Ancestry as having married Cornelius
Keaton. There is something suspicious, though, about the Ancestryrecords.
She is listed as being born in 1789 and married in 1800 (age 11??).There is
also no death date or location. Its possible, but I have no proof, thatthis
Sarah Adams actually married Thomas Bailey. If so, then her father wasJacob
Adams, born in Va and her mother Mary.
