| I have been researching in France for a decade and have accumilated much documentation which supports all my family links. The origins of my family name is located in a small town called Plumelec which means " the parish of Melec " in Breton. This town still exists and has about 1000 inhabitants. I am very proud to have Breton ancestry, it has a unique identity, language & culture. My ancestors of the 17, 18, 19 centuries were typically farmers though there were also slate miners, a shoemaker, and a carpenter. Most French families have been touched in some way by the atrocities of war and I'm proud to have ancestors who fought and died in Napoleon's army in Italy. During the First World War the Bretons took heavy casualties and could categorically be called a holocaust. The battlefields of the Somme and Vimy were killing grounds for many young men and again my ancestors participated in major conflicts of the Great War and were seriously injured. Not all history is colourful but I am proud nevertheless for what they have done and they will never be forgotten. I would like to invite other genealogists who have done research in the region of Brittany France, more specifically in and around Plumelec. Tracing my ancestry has been a passion for me and I feel that before we know where we will go, we must know where we've come from. |
