The Salley Family of Mississippi, Alabama, and S. Carolina
The Salley Family of Mississippi, Alabama, and S. CarolinaUpdated September 5, 2000 | [email protected] |
I am researching the Salley Families of Mississippi and Alabama. My GGG-Grandfather was John Henry Salley 1795-1877, who came to the Carrol County Area of Mississippi in 1837 from the Orangeburg District of S. Carolina.John Henry Salley had 12 children by his wife Eleanor Jones Salley 1796-1864, names follow; James Henry 1815, Jane Mary 1817, Philip Lewis 1819, Rebecca Marcilla 1821, Nancy ????, Jacob Uriah 1825, Henry Jones 1828, Jane Margaret 1830, Daniel John 1832, William Martin 1835, Levicia Eleanor 1837, and John Alexander 1843. Daniel John Salley 1832-1918 (My GG-Grandfather) had 2 children; Milledge Austin 1858, and Eleanor Althea Honor Mary Belle Zora (What a Name!)1860. It is believed he was buried in Milligan Springs Miss. but I have not located the Cemetary. Milledge Austin Salley 1858-1920 (my Great Grandfather) had 2 children; Milledge Haywood 1889, and Mary L. 1893. He is believed to have been buried in Clevland, Miss. but once again we do not know where. Milledge Haywood Salley 1889-1918 (My Grandfather) had 5 children; Milledge Winfred 1909-1987, Lottie (died as infant), Mattie Lois 1912-1977, Haywood 1916-1988, and Robert Calvin 1918-1970 (My Dad). Shortly after my dad was born Milledge Haywood died from the influenza epedimic of 1918, I have a feeling this is what Daniel John (d. 8/29/1918) and possibly even Milledge Austin (d. 2/3/1920) died from as well. This had to be devastating to a family of farmers. Three generations of Salley's in 2 years.Anyway My Grandmother, Daisy Lee Coleman 1885, remarried to A.H. Dorer and had 3 more children by him; Amanda Josephine 1920 (born in Duckhill, Miss.), Lewis H. (d. Dec.25,1944), Nick Carter ????-????. I am not sure when they left Miss. to come to Ala. or for what reason. Probably work? Between 1914 and 1929 Mississippi could not have been a very happy place. World War I was taking place 1914-1918 then in 1918 the whole country was devastated by the worst flu epidimic in history along with one of the worst floods in history in 1927, and then the great depression of 1929 that nearly paralyzed the country for 12 years. It took the War in Europe soon to be known as World War II to bring the country and the world to its feet. Mobile, Al. was a growing port town and work could be found there. Shortly after coming to Mobile my dad found himself a part of one more great and tragic event in his life, World War II. Robert Calvin Salley served in the U.S. Army 3rd Div. 217th Anti Artiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion in WWII under George Patton. He fought in The Battle of the Bulge. His step-brother Lewis also served in WWII but died Dec. 25th 1944 and is buried in Chappelle Cemetary in Belgium France. I would like to find as much information on the above named individuals as possible, along with any decendants they may have.Any help you may offer is deeply appreciated. And if I can help you in any way please let me know. Thank You! |
