THOMAS BURNS, first ancestor to the US, was born DECEMBER 23, 1845, in England to DANIEL BURNS and ANN QUINN.Both parents were born in IRELAND. THOMAS left ENGLAND with his brother JAMES before 1872 (?) probably on a British ship. The rumor has it that James had been involved in an altercation in a pub in which a British officer had been injured or killed. Both left to avoid arrest and traveled to CANADA. James went west and Thomas married ELIZABETH ALLISON (Alliston) on JUNE 17, 1872 in STRATHROY, MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ONTARIO. Thomas and Elizabeth lived in CARADAC TOWNSHIP in MIDDLESEX COUNTY. He was Roman Catholic and she was Wesleyan Methodist. They were married by REVEREND H. DOCKHAM. Thomas listed his occupation as a yeoman (farmer) on his marriage record. Her parents were JOHN and KIZIAH (Mary) ALLISON (Alliston). Her father was born in ENGLAND in about 1815 and farmed in CANADA in about 1820. ELIZABETH was born on JUNE 22, 1848 in MIDDLESEX COUNTY. She had a brother John born in about 1849, sister Margaret born in about 1855 and another sister who died of scarlet fever. Her mother Kiziah was a HARVEY. In 1851 there was a Harvey family in Caradac Township which may have been her parents, John (age 73 years) and Sarah (age 60 years). Both were born in the U.S. In 1851 they had three adult children living at home, Henietta age 24, Mary age 21 and Peninah age 19. Nearby lived Hibard Harvey, age 36 who was possibly a brother of Kiziah.

In 1875 land records indicate that a THOMAS (labourer) and ELIZABETH BURNS of VILLAGE OF MELBOURNE in CARADAC TOWNSHIP, MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ONTARIO, sold property to George Taylor for $300. The final payment was made in 1877 and THOMAS BURNS was residing in BRIDGEN STATION, MOORE TOWNSHIP, LAMBTON COUNTY, ONTARIO.

Thomas and Elizabeth had seven children. JAMES J. born APRIL 3,1872 (presumably in Melbourne, Ontario). Thomas in September 1874, Bertha in January 1879, Anna Marie in April 1881, JOHN THOMAS was born in JULY 7, 1886, and two children died. By the year John Thomas was born in 1886, the family was living in SOUTHWOLD TOWNSHIP, ELGIN COUNTY, ONTARIO (outside of St. Thomas).
