In 1665, two brothers from Normandy, France, left their homeland and settled in the New World. Gabriel and Jacques SAMSON were born in St. Gatien-des-bois, France in 1643, and 1647, and lived side by side in Levis, Quebec with their families. Gabriel's fourth son, also named Gabriel, settled in Port Royal, Nova Scotia (Acadia), and his descendants are the Samsons of eastern Canada. My family tree contains many of the Acadian surnames, the most common of which are: BOUDROT, MARTEL, FOUGERE, LANDRY, FOREST, and MARCHAND. My maternal side is predominately English and Irish, with surnames such as: CROSSLAND, MORAN, DORRELL, FRANCIS, SIMMONS, and HENEY. The CROSSLANDS are an old English family, pre-dating the Norman conquest, and originating in Yorkshire. Henry CROSSLAND immigrated from Hull, England, and settled in Barrie, Ontario, Canada around 1870. My Family Tree file is always expanding! Please contact me by e-mail for questions and/or comments. |
