His parents were Michal and Michelina (Dominick) Pitula

Michel, Pracida, Jozef, Theodora, and Anna Pitula immigrated to the United States from Gorki, Poland in April 3, 1906 on the S.S. Ivernia a Cunard Line Steamship in Steerage. They worked as farmers for a Barron in Poland until they were able to save money for passage. They traveled to Liverpool and then to Ellis Island. Aftering arriving in America they settled in South Bend, Indiana where two of Michel's brothers had already established themselves. Jozef became a citizen in 1918.

  Notes for JOZEF PITULA:
Joseph served in World War I. Because he was a foreigner he was not allowed to carry weapons. He dug the graves for the soldiers who died in battle. Joseph was exposed to gas while serving in WWI and returned home to Indiana. He later died from the effects of the gas.
