Notes for J
OHN "RENTA" BAKER:
Researcher's note: I do not know for sure how much of this family belongs to this John Baker or how many more children he had. There seems to be several different opinions. The History of Linn County, Missouri (1882) indicates that George Washington Baker and Bolin (various spellings) Baker were brothers. They seemed to have left Kentucky about the same time. Bolin Baker, with his family, and the William C. McCollum family, with part of the Bunch family, who have not all been identified by me at this time, were in Chariton County, Missouri by 1821. George W. Baker went to Morgan County, Indiana first, before arriving in Linn County, Missouri in 1840. I have not found proof that the father of the children listed, is John "Renta" Baker but he seems to be the most likely candidate. It is my contention that this family of Bakers is of English descent and not German, therefore the connection made by the W. H. Baker genealogy to that of the "Baker Estate", which uses a different John Baker, is not right. It lists a Jacob Baker as the brother of George and Bolin that I can not find in any other source. I believe that this is where two families may have been combined in error. The German names of Peter or Jacob are never used in any of our families on down the line. The English name of Andrew is used throughout the family. Most everyone believes that Andrew "Andy" Baker, the English immigrant, is the ancestor of John "Renta" Baker. _________________
