Obituary --- Press-Spectator, Salisbury, Missouri
Aged Citizen Passes Away.
John McCollum, of Musselfork vicinity and one of our oldest citizens, died last Sunday after a lingering illness. He was born south of Salisbury, February 17, 1827, and died September 8, 1918, and was, therefore, 91 years, 6 months, and 27 days old. His wife, Nancy, died in 1911, but no funeral was had until last Monday when a double funeral was conducted by Rev. Hise. The couple lived together as man and wife for about 64 years. Ten children were born to the union, but only 4, three sons, Lewis, David and Willis, and one daughter, Mrs. Ben Horton, survive. They both professed Christ when young and united with the Baptist church at Old Chariton, west of Roanoke, and when the summons came found them both ready. Besides the four children he leaves 21 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He had practically spent all his life in Chariton county and the last 60 years where he died. The last 50 years he has been afflicted with shaking palsy. He was probably next to the oldest natural born citizen in the county, a Mr. Sportsman probably being the oldest. A long, busy, useful life is ended and he has gone to his reward.
As before stated a double funeral service was conducted Monday at the Parks school house in the cemetery, by Rev. Hise, in the presence of a large congregation of sorrowing relatives and friends after which he was laid to rest at that place. May he rest in peace. The Press-Spectator extends its sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones.
