Ancestors of Sandra Ellen Gilliam

Generation No. 7

       64. Richard Gilliam168,169, born Abt. 1770 in Buckingham Co., VA170. He was the son of 128. William Gilliam and 129. Elizabeth Ellis. He married 65. Judith Stidham.
       65. Judith Stidham171,172,173, born in Virginia; died 1840-1850 in Scott Co., VA174. She was the daughter of 130. Samuel Stidham.

Notes for Richard Gilliam:
(35) Richard Gilliam, son of William Gilliam, was born in
1770/1771 in Buckingham County, Virginia, and before 1787,
married Judah (?) who was born in 1770/1773. Richard died
about 1840 in Scott County, Virginia. Judah died about 1850 in
Scott County, Virginia. Many researchers believe Judah's father
was Samuel Stidham. Jack Stidham the author of "The
Descendants of Dr. Timothy Stidham" says Samuel's daughter
Judith married a Lewis, not a Gilliam. I've been unable to find any
record that mentions her maiden name. Morgan Co., KY death
records for Delilah (Gilliam) Moore indicated her parents were
Richard and Judah Gilliam.

Children:
36 i William G. Gilliam was born about 1787 in
Buckingham County, Virginia, and married Nancy A. Ferguson
who was born 1 Nov 1794 in North Carolina. William G. died
after 1850 in Scott County, Virginia. Nancy A. died on 1 Nov
1883 in Scott County, Virginia.
37 ii Jesse Gilliam was born in 1789 in Buckingham
County, Virginia, and in 1818 in Scott County, Virginia, married
Elizabeth McCoy who was born in 1797 in North Carolina. Jesse
died after 1870 in Scott County, Virginia. Elizabeth died after
1850 in Scott County, Virginia. Elizabeth's maiden name has not
been proved, it may be Lewis.
38 iii Elizabeth Gillum was born about 1790 in
Virginia, and married Patrick Buckner.
39 iv James Gilliam was born in 1795 in Buckingham
County, Virginia, and on 13 Dec 1815 in Scott County, Virginia,
married Agnes (?) who was born in 1792/1795 in North Carolina.
James died about 1867 and was buried in Rocky Branch, Elliott
County, Kentucky. Agnes was married to Samuel Casteel. James
is said to have died when Newton Gillum (born 1855) was 12
years old. He is supposed to be buried across the road from the
Gillum Cemetery in Elliott Co., KY, there are no markers, only
sandstone rocks with no inscriptions. The Scott Co, VA families
continue to be confusing. In Scott Co., VA Deed Book 2, Agnes is
referred to as the "wife and widow of Samuel Casteel". Since
Samuel's daughter Sally was born about 1808, Agnes's age as
reported in the 1850 census may be wrong by a few years.
Although it's entirely possible that she could have been 13 when
Sally was born, it is probably more likely that her age was merely
written by the census taker as the same as her husbands. He also
married on 19 Nov 1853 in Carter County, Kentucky, Charity
Harriet Bogges who was born 15 Mar 1818 in Wilkes County,
North Carolina. Charity Harriet died on 15 Dec 1893 in Elliott
County, Kentucky and was buried in Gillum Cemetery, Rocky
Branch, Elliott County, Kentucky. Charity Harriet was married to
Spouse unknown. Charity may have been a widow when she
married James Gillum. Verbal family history indicates her maiden
name was Honaker. If she was a widow, Bogges could have been
her married name, leaving the possibility that her maiden name
actually was Honaker.
40 v Richard Gilliam was born in 1795 in Buckingham
County, Virginia, and married Charity Rogers who was born about
1800.
41 vi Delilah Gillum was born in 1797 in Scott County,
Virginia, and on 30 Nov 1819 in Scott County, Virginia, married
James Moore. Delilah died on 1 Dec 1875 in Elliott County,
Kentucky. James died before 1875.
42 vii Joseph Gillum was born about 1800 in
Buckingham County, Virginia, and married spouse unknown.
Joseph died in 1869 in Scott County, Virginia. He also married on
22 Aug 1843 in Scott County, Virginia, Mary "Polly" Hammons
who was born in 1806 in Virginia.
+ 21 viii John Gilliam was born in 1804/1805.
43 ix Charles Gillum was born in 1805 in Virginia, and
married Mary Buckner who was born before 1810 in Kentucky.
Charles died after 1880 in Elliott County, Kentucky. He also
married on 22 Jul 1829 in Morgan County, Kentucky, Winnifred
Lewis, daughter of John Lewis, who was born in 1808. Winnifred
died before 1880 in Elliott County, Kentucky.
44 x Isom Gillum was born in 1810 in Virginia, and on
21 Dec 1827 in Scott County, Virginia, married Rebecca Phipps.
Isom died in 1863 in Carter County, Kentucky. Rebecca died
before 1845. He also married in 1845 in Carter County, Kentucky,
Anna A. (?) who was born in 1821 in Virginia.
45 xi Mary "Polly" Gillum was born about 1811 in
Russell County, Virginia, and on 5 Nov 1829 in Pike County,
Kentucky, married Jonathon Branham, son of John Henry
Branham and Martha "Patsy" Finch, who was born in 1801 in
Russell County, Virginia. Mary "Polly" died on 2 Jan 1894 in
Elliott County, Kentucky. Jonathon died on 14 Nov 1874 in
Elliott County, Kentucky.
46 xii Chesley Gillum was born in 1811 in Virginia, and
on 3 Apr 1836 in Floyd County, Kentucky, married Eliza Estep,
daughter of Corbin Estep and Elizabeth Davis. Chesley died after
1880 in Elliott County, Kentucky. He also married on 31 Jan
1839 in Scott County, Virginia, Sarah Elliott who was born in
1820 in Virginia. Sarah died in 1913 and was buried in Pritchard
Cemetery, Greenup County, Kentucky.

Notes for Judith Stidham:
Richard Gilliam, son of William Gilliam, was born in
1770/1771 in Buckingham County, Virginia, and before 1787,
married Judah (?) who was born in 1770/1773. Richard died
about 1840 in Scott County, Virginia. Judah died about 1850 in
Scott County, Virginia. Many researchers believe Judah's father
was Samuel Stidham. Jack Stidham the author of "The
Descendants of Dr. Timothy Stidham" says Samuel's daughter
Judith married a Lewis, not a Gilliam. I've been unable to find any
record that mentions her maiden name. Morgan Co., KY death
records for Delilah (Gilliam) Moore indicated her parents were
Richard and Judah Gilliam.

Children of Richard Gilliam and Judith Stidham are:

i.   William G. Gilliam, born Abt. 1787 in Virginia175; died in Scott Co., VA; married Nancy Ferguson.

ii.   Jessie Gilliam, born 1789 in Virginia176; married Elizabeth (Kitsey?)(McCoy?).

iii.   Richard Gilliam, born 1795 in Buckingham Co., VA177; married (1) Charity Rogers; married (2) Polly Mary Edwards July 18, 1839.

iv.   Joseph Gilliam, born 1800 in Scott Co., VA178; died August 22, 1843 in Scott Co., VA; married Polly Hammons.

v.   James Gilliam, born Abt. 1802179; died Bef. 1860; married Agnes Casteel.

32 vi.   John Gilliam, born 1804 in Scott Co., VA; died 1888 in Wise Co., VA; married (1) Martha "Mattie" Elliot; married (2) Elizabeth Avent; married (3) Hester K. Wilson.
       66. William S. Elliot180. He married 67. Margaret G. Kincannon.
       67. Margaret G. Kincannon181.

Notes for William S. Elliot:
William S. Elliott was born 28 Aug 1778, and married
Margaret G. Kincannon who was born in 1786. William S. died
on 18 Dec 1860 and was buried in Elliott Cemetery, Scott County,
Virginia. Margaret G. died in 1875 and was buried in Elliott
Cemetery, Scott County, Virginia.

Child of William Elliot and Margaret Kincannon is:

33 i.   Martha "Mattie" Elliot, born 1807 in Scott Co., VA; died 1863 in Louisa, Lawrence Co., KY; married John Gilliam.
       80. John LeMaster182, born 1774 in Amherst Co., VA ?183; died 1846 in MO184. He was the son of 160. John LeMaster and 161. Sarah Vest. He married 81. Frances Tackett.
       81. Frances Tackett185, born 1780186; died 1842 in MO187. She was the daughter of 162. Francis Tackett.

Notes for John LeMaster:
A John Lemaster appears in the tax records of Knox Co. Ky form 1802 through 1810. We believe this is the John who left knox co. in 1810, in time to be in the 1810 census of Floyd co.

John is listed in the 1810 census of Floyd co. ky as the only Lemaster, but we do not know if he was the only one there in 1810, as Eleazer could have been missed by the census taker. In 1820 he is listed as a family with Males: 6 under 10, 1 10 to 16, 1 16 to 18, 1 16 to 26, 1 over 45; Females: 1 10 to 16, 1 16 to 26, and 1 over 45, with 3 persons not naturalized (suggesting that three people were living with him that were not on KY tax lists. Eastern states then issued 'passports' for identity of their citizens to 'go west' through indian territory). He appears in the 1830 and 1840 census.

John patented 50 acres on Paint Creek, Aug. 20, 1821. On Oct. 11 1831 he bought 500 acres, for $60.00, from Wm. I. Williams, lying on the Paint Creek side of Rocky Knob, and adjoining his property and that of Alexander Pelphrey (Floyd Co. Deeds). This was all on Paint creek, above the mouth of Barnett's creek. It is interesting to note that on Sept. 17, 1824 John Tackett patented 100 acres on Paint creek and Lancaster Lemaster patented 50 acres, same creek, same date.

John lived in KY until 1842 and when the game began to diminish, he and all his family, except sons John Jr. (IV), Joseph, and daughter Sally (Tackett), moved to Missouri. "Joseph and John would have also gone to Missouri if they had not been married to wives whose feet did not itch to travel."(Vaughn). It is not know where in Missouri that John settled, but some of his sons lived in Lawrence and Bany co. MO, some in Washington co. Arkansas. According to family bible entry, John died in 1846.

Looking for information on the ancestors of Machell Tackett b. ca1762, d. ca 1793, married to Ely
Lemasters. Their son, Frances Lemasters, b.1793, d.1858 was my 4th Great-Grandfather and their
Grandson, Daniel Lemasters, b. 1820 in Floyd Co. KY was my 3rd Great-Grand Father.

Lucinda: Well, I guess one of the "Great Mysteries" of our family, is just who were the parents of your Machell
Tackett, c1762-c1793, who marr. Eleazor Lemaster, in 1786 in Amherst Co., VA, and her assumed sister,
Frances, c1780-1842, who marr. John Lemaster? These families moved to SC, Lee Co., VA and old Floyd
Co., KY [now Johnson Co.]. Many members of The Tackett Family Assn. belong to this branch. Although we
had long thought that a Wm. Tackett was their father, it is now our "assumption" that the father was a FRANCIS
TACKETT.
