Biographical Details
Born in Lincoln on 4th September 1915, Stanley became Head Boy at the City School, Lincoln before going on to St Catharine's College, Cambridge in 1934. He achieved a 1st in French and Spanish and went on to be awarded an MA and PhD. Stanley joined the Masons in 1936, later becoming Cambridgeshire Provincial Grand Master from 1979-89. He joined the Suffolk Regiment as a Private in September 1939, the first of 40 years in the Army including Royal Marines Special Forces, Commando Training, War Office Intelligence and the Cambridgeshires and Royal Anglian Regiment Territorial Army. He became Deputy Lieutenant in 1959, received his OBE in 1973 and retired in 1982 as Colonel.
He married Rosalind Molly Fairfax on the 26th October 1940, and was elected Fellow of St Catharine's in 1943, Acting Dean from 1946-51, Bursar 1961-79 and President in 1980. He lectured internationally, in the USA, Tokyo, Paris, Bucharest, Strasbourg, Australia, Pakistan, India, Thailand, New Zealand and Canada and was a member of the International Commission for Philosophical and Humanistic Sciences from 1952-84, the last 5 years as President.
Stanley died on the 19th May 1992, his funeral held in the chapel of St Catharine's College.
