[A] James Hayter Jackson. Born 24 November 1800 in Putney, England, and died 2 August 1877 in Picton, New Zealand. He married Eliza Roil 19 February 1843 in Nelson, daughter of Thomas Roil and Sarah Sewry. She was born 26 May 1826 in Alton, Hampshire, England, and died 3 July 1910 in Picton, New Zealand..

[C] Thompson, William, B abt 1792 Resided at Beacon Towers or Fallows in St. Just, England. M Catherine.

[D] Tostevin, Thomas, B abt 1825 Guernsey Channel Islands. M Mary Duquemin B abt 1826

  • Captain James Hayter Jackson (4 KB)
    James, born 24th Nov 1800 is reputed to be one of the first 50 settlers in New Zealand, arriving in the early 1820's. He spent his early years on Kapiti Island, living with the famous Maori Chief, Te Rauparaha, prior to setting up his own whaling station in Jackson's Bay, Tory Channel, Marlborough, New Zealand
  • James Thomas Thompson (20 KB)
    James, born 3rd Jul 1853, and his older brother William, came to New Zealand on the Ship "City of Auckland" arriving in Auckland They first went to Napier before settling in Sanson. Joined by brother Alfred, the three brothers worked as contractors. One of their main contracts was forming the streets of Sanson with metal which had to be carted from the Rangitikei river by horse and dray and it had to be loaded by shovel.
  • Edgar Seaborne Savell B 30th Dec 1884 (25 KB)
    Graham Savell's grandfather. Born in Foxton, New Zealand, spent his early life farming in the Pohangina Valley. Later, was employed in the flax industry, at Foxton and at Wairoa, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

    Jackson homestead, circa 1912 - 1913, located in Jacksons Bay, Tory Channel, Marlborough, New Zealand
  • James Hayter Jackson Jnr (23 KB)
    James Junior, born 4th Jan 1845. He was well over six feet tall and weighed 23 stone
  • Esther Jackson (3 KB)
    Esther Jackson, born 16th Feb 1850, daughter of James Hayter Jackson, married Thomas Daken, [25th Nov 1841 - 8th Nov 1888] on 15th Jun 1868. They had 10 children
  • Mary Alice Jackson (3 KB)
    Mary, born 13th Mar 1861, daughter of James hayter Jacksom, married Frederick Neal [1st Feb 1853 - 21st Jul 1935] on 6th Mar 1878
  • Emma Jackson (3 KB)
    Emma Jackson, daughter of James Hayter Jackson, born 27th Oct. 1855. Married John Lynds [ 1st Oct, 1844 - 7th Feb, 1896] on 27th Aug,1872 at Picton, NZ and had 4 children. She later married Charles Stent on 28th Dec, 1904 and had a further 16 children
  • Whaling boat 'Swiftsure' owned by James Jackson (30 KB)
    The 'Swiftsure' in her days of whaling captured about 60 right whales and 300 humpbacks and earned in money about sixty thousand pounds. She is now stored beside the big whale skeleton in the Canterbury Museum and it can be noticed that her loggerhead is very worn by the continual fraction of the rope.
