Notes for John Howard:
John Howard became a Quaker and because of his religious views was arrested in 1662 and fined for being delinquent in the military defense of the province. Besse's "Sufferings of the People Called Quakers" gives an account of his arrest along with fourteen other trained soldiers, in Captain Thomas Besson's company. He was fined five hundred pojnds of tobacco or two month's imprisonment without bail for being delinquent in the military defense of the province. Located in Maryland in 1662. Heir
at law of his father Matthew (so he must have been the eldest son).
It was upon one of these many hills of Severn, in the neighborhood of Round Bay, that John Howard slew the lion. John Howard, heir-at-law of his father Matthew and namesake of his grandfather, John, was a progressive surveyor of lands. He located at Round Bay. In 1663, with Charles Stephens, he took up "The Woodyard" and "Charles Hills," on the south side of the Severn.
Upon the death of Charles Stephens, John Howard married Susannah Stephens, the widow. She was the heir of Captain John Norwood. The only issue of John and Susannah Howard was Captain John Howard, Jr. John Howard, Sr., extended his surveys to Baltimore County, and took up "Timber Neck," upon the mouth of the Whetstone. It later became a part of Baltimore City. He also took up lands in Harford County. John Howard's second wife was Elinor, widow of John Maccubin, by whom there was no issue.
She was of the Carroll family. Her daughter, Sarah Maccubin, became the wife of William Griffith, the immigrant. John Howard's will, of 1696, left his extensive estate to his son, John Howard, Jr., and to his wife's grandson, Orlando Griffith.
John Howard had a large estate and lived the life of a wealthy planter, with both slaves and white servants. All of our Maryland ancestors from this region were of his class.
Almost all of the Anne Arundel and Howard County early families were
connected.
John Howard, son of Matthew Howard and Anne Hall was born about 1637 in the Virginia Colony when Sir Francis Wyatt was its governor. Population of all the English Colonies in America at that time is estimated to be 28,000 people; however, 22,500 of those were in New England.
