Notes for THOMAS SLEEPER:
Notes on this family from World Family Tree, varioius submitters
WFT 6-3860:
"Thomas Sleeper was born about 1616 and was a resident of Hampton, NH soon after the settlement of that town in 1638. Land was granted to him as early as 1646. In the later part of his life, he lived on what is now known as Shaw's hill. His was then a frontier house, no other family living so remote from the main settlement. From him and his descendants, that part of the town was called Sleepertown, since corupted into "Sleepytown". He died Jul 30, 1696 and his family afterwards removed to the newly incorporated town of Kingston. His wife Joanna died there Feb 5, 1703 at the age of 80 years. She was buried in Hampton. Their children were: Elizabeth, Mary, Ruth, John, Moses, Aaron & Luther."

"Thomas Sleepr came from Bristol, ENGLAND in 1640 with his brother MOses. Moses went to settle in Philadelphia, which later became theState of PA. Thomas terried a while in Boston, MA before settling in Hampton, Rockingham CO, New England which later became New Hampshire in 1788.
Thomas Sleeper was born about 1616 and became a resident of Hampton NE soon after the settlement of that town in 1638. There were problems with the Indians. Parties of Indians committed raids in several places not very far away. The inhabitants of Hampton suffered less than those in the river towns, though they lived in constant fear. There appears to have been a plot to burn the house of Thomas Sleeper. About 9PM in early Nov 1675 an Indian was discovered passing from the barn about 8 rods distant towards the house with fire in his right hand and straw under his left arm. When he was about midway between the 2 buildings, he was fired upon from the house and immediately fell. The straw took fire and blazed up, an dby the light of it, another indian was seen running away. The fire soon went out, having done no injury. The people within the house, fearing that others might be lying in ambush, dared not go out into the night to the place where the Indian fell. In the morning no dead Indian was to be found.
Thomas was listed as being a weaver by trade when he came to New England however, since he acquired land near Hampton, it is presumed he became a farmer. "
