Notes for Jacob Myers: Jacob R. Myers, son of Conrad Myers was born in York County, PA in 1803. From the Pictorial and Biographical Memoirs of Indiana: The Myers come of Pennsylvania Dutch stock, descended from one of the early colonial families that have for generations been residents of York County, PA. Conrad Myers was born in York County, and like most of the male members of his family, became a well-to-do farmer and miller, and lived to attain the age of seventy years. Jacob R. Myers, his son, was born and reared on his father's farm in York County, Pa., and like a true son of his father became a tiller of the soil. He acquired a practical education in the German language in the common schools of his vacinity, and upon reaching man's estate was married to Lydia, daughter of Andrew Utz, also a native of York County and of Dutch descent. She was a member of the Dunkard Church. To this union a family of thirteen children was born, two of whom died in infancy. In 1832, Jacob pushed into Stark County, OH in search of land, locating on a farm four miles south of Canton, where he lived until 1852/53 when he moved on to Elkhart County, IN. He bought a 200 acre farm, where he died at age sixty-two, in 1865. Politically he was a staunch Democrat, a strong Union man during the Civil War, giving two of his sons to the Seventy-fourth Indiana Regiment. They were in several battles, including Lookout Mountain, returned home unwounded. In 1892 a reunion of the Myers family was remembered in the "Independent" Middlebury IN newspaper issue of February 5, 1892.
Myers Family Prominent in Affairs of This Locality For Many Years by H.S.K. Bartholomew "A rather remarkable reunion took place at the home of Jesse Myers just north of town last Sunday. It was the meeting together for the first time in over thirty years of the Myers brothers, nine in number, and their only sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Nihart. One of the remarkable things about the family is that they are all hearty, stalwart men, and although the oldest is 65 and the youngest is 42, the hand of death has never been laid upon one of their number and from youth up they have enjoyed remarkable health. The names and ages are as follows: Jesse, 65; John, 61; Andrew, 59; Samuel, 55; Hiram, 53; Levi, 50; David, 49; Moses, 46; Aaron, 44; Frank, 42; Elizabeth, 63. Their combined ages make 587 years. That they are a family of more than ordinary physique is shown by the fact that their combined weight is 1925, an average of 175 pounds, several weighing over 200. We doubt if there is another family in the state of this size that have lived so many years and can present their ranks unbroken by the hand of death and each member enjoying perfect health. That their meeting together last Sunday under one roof after the lapse of so many years was one of the most enjoyable occasions of their lives goes without saying, and was, without doubt, one that will never be repeated while they are on earth." The Myers family was about as well known a half century and more ago as any family in Middlebury Township. Six of them lived in Middlebury and vacinity at that time. Up to the fall of 1882 Jesse lived two miles west of Middlebury, just across the hollow east of the old Jug Handle school house, on the north side of the road. (He was married in Stark Co. OH 6 July, 1848 by H.E. Melsheimer M.G.) Andrew lived in Middlebury, Frank was a blacksmith in Middlebury, later moved to Elkhart where he died. Aaron a bachelor, also lived in Middlebury (note - he was somewhat retarded as remembered by great-niece Helen M. Oviatt). John lived about a mile northwest of Middlebury and for many years operated what was known as the lower mill. Elizabeth lived north of Middlebury, just over the line in York township. The above article was found in the scrapbook of Andrew Myers daughter, Ida Myers Mather.
